Fuel Mileage...EEEK!

I finally installed a Trail Tech Vector on the '11 250 6D, so this weekend I ran it out of gas a couple of times to see how far she'll go on an OEM tank. The answer is: not far enough!

First tank I made it 28.5 miles before I had to switch to reserve. With tank #2 I made it about 27 miles, but it was not filled to the brim. Looks like I need a bigger tank for enduros. I didn't feel like pushing the bike so I didn't run reserve clear out. I doubt you'll get more than 6 or 7 miles out of reserve. I ran about 5 miles on reserve and it was about an inch from going dry.

Now having said all that, I have not confirmed my son's programming of the Vector by checking it against a known distance. I'll do that before I go into a panic.

Regardless of the fuel mileage, I LOVE this bike!
 
Dang, we get just under 40 miles on the stock tank with our bikes (and I'm pushing 300lbs). Any chance your float level is a little high and sloshing fuel out the overflow tubes while you're riding? That was happening with my kids bike when we first got it and his mileage was about the same then as you are getting.
 
You have a problem. All three of my 250s went at least 45 miles on a stock tank before reserve, even more going eaiser trail riding. Yes, check the float height first.
 
I made some queries about the float height on the as2 carbs that the 010's ans 11's are now coming with. Even the pro's like JD and ES dont know. The best shot I've got is 6.5 to 9 mm. In the case of the newer carbs the old 16 mm at 65 degrees no longer stands true.
 
In addition to what has been said, rb designs head work noticably improves efficiency and throttle response. Glenn had some numbers in tight stuff that I don't recall.

Jetting also helps and the stock jetting isn't doing the bike any favors.

For float height level has anyone called sudco?

It's not peeing on me and I'm not seeing or smelling gas. I'm betting it's an invalid calibration when my son set up the Vector. I'll put a helmet on and check what the odo says after I go down my driveway and back (.9mi.).
 
The head mod does help. My '03 was originally the piggy of the three but cleaned up nicely. 45 to 55 till reserve depending on the right hand, you should not need a big tank for these bikes for enduros. Even the 300s are pretty good when set up right, WAY better on gas than the KTM300s I've had experience with.

I never saw a new PWK AS II carb, but I would think it logical that the float valve should be just closing as the float is level. This works out to be 16mm in the original AS carb.
 
Not so sure about miles, but know my 300 does most hare & hounds 3 hours on a tank full. Wide open going about 2 & 1/2 hours.

Mate's KTM 300 uses at least a third more fuel:rolleyes:

This might seem redundant, but what is your gas/oil mix, 50:1? If you drop to 40:1, (and re-jet), or even if you're jetted for colder temps, your mileage will drop. One size richer on the main and one position on the needle made a 10 mile difference with a 3 gallon tank on my old KDX.
 
I checked the odo. Mileage is accurate.

I'm running 50:1 with a 180 main, OEM needle in the middle, air screw 2 1/4 out. It's cold here! The thing runs like a scared rabbit when I release the hounds.
 
There are a lot of variables, and cold is not helping. Still though, in the 20s is pretty bad and I never had anything that thirsty even with somewhat sloppy jetting. KTM300s go around 35 miles on a tank before reserve. I'm running a 180 main with a JD blue needle in the original air striker, but not sure how the two relate as far as signature(if one tends to be overall richer than the other). I'd check/set the float as described in widebear's post, forget any specific numbers.
 
yeah I ran 55 miles on my 2010 GG 300 during clubs dual sport with stock needle in middle position, 45 pilot, 180 main in 40-50F weather. My bike leaks gas out of gas cap vent also and I never ran out during 55 miles. That was with my ICO Checkmate on mileage it seems accurate as it was on in every enduro I did. That 55 miles was at a piddly pace but it did it...
 
When I had a 300 I could manage 60 miles of gentle riding and 50 miles reliably in the dry. It would drop if wet and muddy of course.
 
I found with the stock float setting the carb will drain fuel out the overflow on downhills steeper than 30 degrees. If you ride in steep areas you can waste a lot of fuel out the overflow.

I set the float lower than spec by ~2 mm (when viewed as oriented on the MC). This way there is a lower fuel level in the float bowl - I spill less fuel and get better mileage. I have had no fuel starvation problems, including steep hills.

The RB designs head mod is great - it improves fuel mileage and performance.

I ge about 60 miles out of the stock tank in very tight technical terrain keeping speed up in the corners.
 
I think the ole rule of thumb, is to hold the carb upside down and adjust it so, the seam in float is parallel with the base of the carb. At least that's how I did mine and it runs fine. Stock it was a lot higher. Not sure on the exact measurement.
