Well I guess its time to do a complete rebuild on my trusty 03-mc250. Five years almost to the day since I purchased the bike it started to develope an intermitent metalic knock. She came to me with only two mx track practices on it from a gentleman who relocated from Florida to Kentucky, where everybody apparently rides quads not bikes.Ive been so impressed with this bike. Hundreds upon hundreds of hours with no problems whatsoever, a recent leak down test shows zero leakage from my two year old top end job. I could gush on and on about this jem but I need to get ready to go riding. Got to try out my new 300 to 250 conversion job.

Wild Bear, You said you've had the bike 5yrs yet its only been two yrs since you did a top end? So this is the second top end in 5yrs is that correct? How often do you ride and how do you ride? The reason I am asking is I am thinking of going back to 2 stroke after riding 4 strokes for over 14yrs and I am looking at an 2004 Gas Gas EC250. I am concerned but reliability and dependability. Any words of wisdom about GAs Gas? Thanks

It all depends how you ride and how often you service the bike. My bike always had the filter changed after every ride and oil every 2 rides. My top end has about 160 hours of hard ridding on it. Over this winter I am going to do a big bore although I could get away with ridding the stock top end for another season.

Yes the mc-250 had only one top end job done that was in 2006. I recall the clearances were very tight using a honda spec wiseco piston , one and a half thou piston to wall so I heat cycled it very carefully.I rode the bike alot but not exclusivly as I also had a 300 that I purshase new in nov 05. This year I rode, we are talking only motor running time here , 150 hours, most of that on the 250. so for the mc-250 a total of 200 hours running time on that top end?.I did a leak down test a few weeks ago on the 250 and it indicated zero ring leakage, I have retired the bike but have not looked at the piston. The other bike I ride started life as a 300. It just got converted to a 250, thanks motowest. I would guess it has 150 hours to200 total running time. It has never had anything repair wise done to it , original piston looks good enough to be re rung!with very little blowby on the piston. Both bikes were run exclusivly on amsoil at 100-1 ratio and started life and remain as A size cylinders. As far as your question as to how hard are the bikes riddin, , hard enought to keep up with master and expert leval riders on 450's and 5 and a quarters, . I even did a 100 mile duall sport ride on the 300 with guys riding 650,s, suffice to say that one that one I was religated to hind teat but with 47 tooth rear sprocket I was still able to lope along happily at 50 mph.
