I noticed at the end of Sundays ride there was a little too much play in the rear suspension.
check out the pics.
Found out the top of the shock mount cracked and split open.
I checked the bearing and it's still tight...no play in it.
Looks like it's a weak point where the casting halves are...as you can see in the pics it split right on the casting line.
IMHO it's a possible defect in either the process or it's not engineered thick enough...just glad it didn't come apart and cause a wreck.
Dose anyone know where I can get a sachs top shock body ?
The shock is off an 08 EC 300
Thanks for any help

Wow Dave glad you caught it before it completely let go on you. Just me but I think I would look for an Ohlins after seeing that. I've never seen a shock break like that; scary. We have an extra shock I'll check and see what it is for you.

Thanks John 01....I just do single track, no mx, no jumping...I think it's a casting flaw because it looks like there's some poreosity within the break.
At this point I'll take anything to get me back on the trai:D

Dave the extra shock was given to the guy that bought the 08 KTM 505 from my son. I doubt it would have worked on your bike anyway. I was thinking it was off my 09 Husky but was mistaken; sorry.

Not seen that before. It's a long shot and a long way away, but try CCycle's Bill Pemberton at 860-267-1710 in CT. I know he has worked on the sachs stuff a bit, so he may at least know where to get. Good luck.

Ya, I may be screwed, I have a call into Mark at Gofasters....hope he can help.

I had that happen on an '85 KTM; I was able to get a local guy to weld it & it held up fine the rest of the time I had the bike.

I may visit that, but I'm not sure the weld will hold in this case, it's not just cracked, it's split open about 1/2", so that will need to be bent back which will weaken the whole ear.
Then there's the machining.

Yikes that would scare me; hoping the weld would hold. Have you looked into the guys that are parting out bikes etc. ? Maybe call a few suspension shops and see if they have some take off's were guys stepped up to TTX or something?

If you take time to think about the loading on the shock, wouldn't this type of failure be caused by load when the shock tops out?

Take it to am machine shop ! let them fix it for you .. you will probably have to take the shock apart first .. They can weld it back and machine ot for you no problem ...

That will be a last resort, I ride some gnarly single track with a lot of elevation transitions...don't want that breaking and getting toasted.
