I have 00 ec200 that I've just finished restoring, now the only thing I've changed engine wise is an FMF gnarly and a new air filter... When driving the bike I noticed the pick up wasn't quite right! Bottom end power is just fine, smooth and gradual but as soon as it gets to full throttle It sometimes splutters as if it's cold, and then sometimes it just doesn't rev hard at all, no spluttering or anything it just won't rev? I took the air filter out just to see if it would make any difference and it did, it ran just fine! So would this mean it was running to rich? And if so what will I do? I also changed the ratio from 50:1(and a bit) to 40:1(and a bit) any suggestions would be great! Thanks.

You are in the right section, look at this thread and go from there. Typically, anything above 1/2 throttle is main jet related, so you might be a bit rich on the main. You can play with needle clip settings (cheapest/easiest), then progress to main jet swaps.

The first thing I would do is determine the carb baseline (needle, needle clip position, main jet size, pilot jet size, and air screw position) and compare it to the jetting database.

Another consideration is the power valve, but I would determine carb settings first.

Good luck!

That's great thanks very much! Hope it's nothing major, the joys of two strokes haha

Ok so I took the needle out and it was at the very top which I thought was strange so I moves it to the middle and it ran absolutely terrible.. Any suggestions? :/

So that means the bike is way too rich, hence why the needle was on the top clip(leanest).

What needle and jets has it got now?
What are the temperature and elevation you normally ride at?
Being an 00, the carb is probably an AS1, does it have a screw on cap?

Right i see, emm I'm not quite sure what jets are in it now as I haven't tried taking them out yet... I ride in Ireland which is fairly level, no drastic height elevation! And tempeture wise mid teens normaly? But it use to run fine before I put the new FMF gnarly on!! Yes the carb has a screw on top and on the slider it says k7 if that's any clue? Thanks for the advice!!

you put this setting in : PJ : 40 to 42 ,
MJ 178 to 180
and a CCL needle, clip somewhere around the middle.
i have slide Nr 6 in it?
my gasser 200 is an '01.
this is a very good setting for me. (i live in belgium, wich is fairly equal in conditions)
you could allso take your base gasket out and replace it with rtv ;-) but i'm not responsable if there's anything going bad ;) (i did it though and don't regret it so far!!)

my 200 is fabulous with ever since i did all of the above! :D

good luck and enjoy!!
ciao, Hannes.

Something to take note of. The carb responds to throttle position, not RPM. You have noted your issues occurred towards full throttle so its evident that your main jet is the circuit we want to work with. Changing needle positions and pilots won't do anything.

You then removed the air filter (added more air/leaned the mixture) to determine that the bike was running rich.

So the simple solution here is to pull the main jet out, have a look at what size it is and drop it down a size or two. And then try again.

I am just wondering if maybe your air filter was over oiled? This would also cause an over-rich condition. You might try a clean lightly oiled filter first.

Ok so I put the needle back to the way it was and I put a new filter in it with just a small amount of oil.. Made no difference what so ever. I've just taken the card off and the MJ is 185, what size do you reckon I should go down to?

I suggest you read post #7, I bet those are close. Here in the US I run a 42 pilot and 178 main and my bike runs really well.

As per previous post, drop a couple sizes. If you're at 185 try a 178/180 main. If you don't have them I'd pick up both and maybe a 175 too. You'll probably find the 178 is about right though.
