Hey guys, tell me about the 2000 EC200

I have a chance to get a 2000 EC200 that needs some work. Basically the guy says it is a complete bike (missing a little plastic) that just needs pistons/rings and a cylinder bore. The person who has it got it from their local shop and just has too many other rebuild projects. He is a Trials GasGas rider. He says the engine is a 9/10 other than cylinder, plastic is 7/10, stock bars, hand guards, overall solid bike. Missing rear fender, front plate airbox cover. He says he and the mechanics at the local shop think the only issue is the piston/gaskets/cylinder bore.

I love my 99 EC300 and want another bike and need one for my buddy to ride. At $400 I really couldn't pass it up. So I put a $50 deposit on it. Before I go through with the rest of the payment though can some of my GG family educate me on this bike a bit and if you guys think it will be a good purchase as a woods bike for my buddy (and me too) to ride.

Thanks so much, everyone.

That is what I was thinking. He said the cylinder may could be cleaned(hopefully) and the gaskets and pistons have to be replaced but he and the shop he got it from's mechanics think that is the only issues. It does need a rear fender, airbox cover and front plate, has no kickstand or lighting but otherwise he said bike is very soid. Said the engine (other than piston) is a solid 9/10 and the plastics (what is there) is a 7/10. Has handguards, original handlebars all in good shape.

Sounds to me like a no brainer but soem reassurance wouldn't hurt me any. =)

I have a yellow rear fender from my 99 EC300 (which now has light red plastic). It may fit. And I have a front black plate but I wold like a healdight to be honest. What do you think guys? It looks stripped down but he says it is complete other than some of the plastic.

It could be a 2000.....looks like they used the 45mm Zokes again, like in 99.

If it was my $$$ I would pass! Simple, who know what else is wrong, tranny? Suspension bearings? Forks? Leak? Shock? Leak? Cylinder? Piston kit is close to $200.00. What about the main bearings? Why was it torn down? Did a crank stuffer bolt back out and jack the rod?

The left side rear number plate has black marks......is that from the rear tire rubbing under suspenion compression? Bent subframe?

Plastic is hard to get for the older steeds!

Too many unknowns for my blood.

Just my .02

In the side view picture I can't see the coil hanging from the frame in the usual 00' & newer spot. If you get a better picture of the clutch side the coil mounts to the frame thats parallel to the ground near the cylinder head 00' & newer.

If you pass do you lose your deposit? I would probably still buy it if it was one year older than I thought but I'd try to get it cheaper :D .

Okay, I've got the VIN but Mark is out at GoFasters so it will be tomorrow before knowing anything.

I was basically just looking a cheap bike for my buddy to ride and was excited to get this. However, you guys do point out some valid concerns. I'm sure I would lose my 50.00 if I back out unless the model year was wrong. We will see I guess what happens. Next step is find out the actual year.

You could try this but I don't know if it works with Euro bikes. I've used it a lot for Japanese bikes.

so here is what I found out thru Mark at GoFasters. It is a 99 EC200. The seller was told it was a 2000. He apologized and said we had both been had a bit. But he was very cool about it. He said since he mis-advertised it he would sell it for 350.00 instead of 400 if I still wanted it. He also said this about the condition of the rest of the bike. Any thoughts on this are appreciated. He has been real cool. I don't think he is to blame at all. He went with what they told him.

From the seller:

I did look over the bike pretty good. Engine looks very nice inside. Frame, forks, suspension look real good. Tires look almost new.

Took a strong light and looked at the cylinder. You are not going to be able to use it without doing something. Probably a clean up bore and then recoat. They did not mention it at the importer but I can't believe you couldn't sleeve the cylinder - should be cheaper than bore and recoat, then you can overbore as many times as you want.

Someone mentioned that it's the same engine as a KTM. If it is that may also offer you some options. Might even be able to pick up a used cylinder.

So what do you guys think of that? Could I find a used GG cylinder or what is the best and cheapest way to fix this and about what will it run. Sounds like the rest of the bike is in real good shape.
