How can I figure out exactly which model bike I bought??

Hello to all,

I purchased two gas gas motorcycles in the beginning of last summer one to ride and the second for parts. I was under the impression I purchased a 2000 250ec but I am not so sure anymore and when I asked the local dealer who used to sell gassers back in the day if he could tell me by the vin # the year and model he told me that I cannot go by the vin #'s because they were never correct back then  ... Ok so I am in the process of doing a top end, cleaning the power valve ( never ever done barely moved ) and fixing all the other issues but I do not know what bike I even have to be able to order the correct parts??? Can someone please guide me ... I have been searching the forum for a while now but haven't figured out how to tell what bikes I have at this point. Any help would be greatly appreciated. they both have wire looms coming out at 10 o'clock position by the flywheel cover. I think at least one is pre-2000 because of everything I read on the forum about stamped #'s etc?.. Thank you ..

Don

can you post a picture of them.. do the fuel tanks and rad shrouds looks the same between the 2 bikes? is the flywheel cover plastic ?

Don,

There is a thread on de-coding the VIN # http://www.gasgasrider.org/forum/showthread.php?t=8199&highlight=decode

My bike is a 99 and it has a VIN and I know it reflect what the bike really is. There could be a case where someone has swapped out a frame and engine, meaning put a 250 in a bike that is was a 300 at one time, and vise a versa....

Wire at 10:00 should be a 2k2, if they were at 2 pm, then 2k3 if I am correct.

Pictures are worth a 1000 words, and more than likely you'll get some more help as well.

Good Luck!

and my 2001.. i had a 2000 and the only real difference in the body was the 01 has an air box door and a 2000 did not..

Wheelieman69,

I'm on the other side of rt 15 from you in Jefferson. When you get some pics up I can tell you exactly what you have. For now just email or iMessage to me, iPad is easy. It does have a 2K-2 ignition from your description so probably a '00 XC250 (I had one).

Welcome to the neighborhood. PM me your info and if I have time I can check your bike out. Let me know if you want to ride with us, hope you like rocks.

Ok so I still can't get photos from the iPad on here yet but after looking At the thread rick sent it looks like they are xc 250 's ??

Vins are

Vtrxc259904
Vtrxc259903

It should be worth noting that with a GasGas, the different models mainly mean they have different goodies, with the exception of the stator. Other than that the only differences are the graphics and what goodies/suspension you got with the bike. The important thing to do is to understand what your bike has, and like they said above a pic is worth 1000 words. On the older bikes a vin may not mean much at all. Over the years you could have changed the stator from a 2k2 to a 2k3 or you could have swapped the ohlins forks for zokes or a sachs shock for an ohlins.

Hey Glenn,

I am new to the world of forums so I am not sure what a pm is ?
( private message ) ? And not sure how to but I am learning fast ::D
I figured you were very close to me and yes I would greatly appreciate any knowledge you can give me on these bikes. This is my first top end let alone a bike with a power valve !!! I am loving figuring it out tho and can't wait till its back together. I do love rocks ! I have been riding north jersey rocks for a long time as well. my last bike was a 2004 Ktm 525exc which I absolutely love as well but wanted a smaller bike for hare scrambles etc.. Weird transition but there hasen't been a hill I haven't been able to make it up yet :) I was really impressed with the feel of these bikes.

Thank you djroggen...

I assumed the only difference was transmission gears and other goodies.

I rode the one bike all last summer and loved it so I decided to bring both of them back to good shape if I can get the parts I need and it looks like I will be able to.

Thank you again

Don,

Yes, PM is private message. I'll PM you with my info and you will get a notification, then you can read and reply. I just got an iPAD mini, love the thing. Tapatalk HD app works great. For a quick answer just iMessage or email me the pics. Droggen is correct, older GGs differed by the trim and setup. The then importer specified bikes a certain way, light ignitions, WP43 forks, aggressive CDIs. These were the original "XC"s. Most consumables are the same for all years/models. You can What specific parts do you need fast?

I do a lot of riding right from my house. Perhaps you have been on my side, maybe we have even passed each other in the woods. For obvious reasons we will not discuss specifics in public.;), but you are welcome to join us. Been doing a lot of harescrambles lately as well, this year the whole ECEA series. My buddy just got a new '12 GG XC250R like mine, and my brother a new Husky TXC310. Hopefully a fun safe year.

Ok so it seems I have a 1999 ec 250 so I have been told by the vin # . I see in all the posts if there isn't pictures it didn't happen so here it goes..

This is the way I purchased the bike and rode it for a season.

I was riding the bike at the end of the season and the bike cut out and no matter what I tried it would not run. Got the bike back to the garage and figured it was a top end because of how much smoke and spooge I was getting but didn't check compression. So I got the top end off and checked my end gap etc.. All looked good other than marking on cylinder walls. ??? Ok opened up the stator cover only to find my issue !!!

The fw nut backed off locking up the fw and shearing the key! Ok at least I know what's going on at this point. So I decided to rip the bike apart and go over everything and fix / replace parts that are spent.
