How Cold?

Just wondering about the weather, the Vikings/ Seahawks game has a predicted temp of 0* F. What's the coldest temperature you've ever went riding in? How cold before you say "forget it, I'm staying inside!"? I've been ice-racing/ riding when it was -20* F. That was '76 or '77, had to have a kid on a 3 wheeler pull-start my Can Am. I couldn't spin the engine fast enough with the kickstarter (gear lube at -20 isn't that fluid!). Years later ('86?) I was racing an XR 350, temp around 0*, had some frostbite/ wind burn on my face just under the goggles. Got to adjust the valves on my buddy's Yam SR500 bare-handed, on a lakeshore that day! Somehow we all survived.

12* F this year at our annual black Friday ride when we started mid morning, warmed up a few degrees. I just add one more layer and some latex gloves under my regular gloves, I was sweating a mile in. Not really interested in riding if it's much colder than that.

18 degrees f. a couple years ago on our favorite (rough) single-track trail, shock and forks were so cold it was like riding on a brick. I'll pass.

Last year we raced in a foot of snow (no studs) and temps were in the 20's. I was soaking wet with sweat at the end of the race. I just had a layer of under armor and regular riding gear on. Also a pair of Moose gloves that I bought at Halls, warmest gloves I have ever owned.

I've ridden when it has been snowing and in the 30F range a few times....rare in the desert....hands hovering around the cylinder every time we stop.

Almost one year ago exactly, I raced an enduro event up by Lubbock called the Lone Star Enduro - it was a 2 day event.
Saturday's race was in the low 70's - absolutely amazing.
We woke up on Sunday to mid 30's and rain/sleet. When we finished the day, the temperature had dropped into the low 20's. Since it was sleeting, I removed my goggles.
I had blurred vision for about 2 weeks. Although I wore surgical gloves under my regular gloves, the tips of my fingers were numb for well over a month. I was actually worried that I had done some damage. Back in the woods at the roughly half-way point, I thought that it was a bridge too far in terms of cold, but the checkpoint had a huge bonfire. It was like heaven - my camelbak was frozen solid, so getting it thawed was nice as I needed a drink.

Looking back it was a fun adventure, but it sucked at the time.

-28 C (which according to Googles unit translator is around -18 F) with my then brand new KTM LC4 Adventure in February 2003. On original Metzeler Sahara 3 tyres. These were really slippery, believe me :)

cold weather vs alcohol

Brian Hasslen (GG rider) and i went to the vikings/seahawks game! Full capacity, everyone standing the whole game and minus 6 degrees!

Only problem was you couldn't drink a full 16 ounce beer because it would freeze by the end...guess we needed to drink them quicker!

Great game....until the end!

Not sure what you mean about the game but the beer situation didn't sound good :D

Haha

Yep, that was pretty much us. A ton of seahawks fans at the game though, can't imagine they were all from the west coast. Had to be alot of bandwagoners that have given up hope on the purple!

MargusV, how does that work for you? your bike is a 250?? I would enjoy reading a write-up on how you fitted the kit and the issues you had to make it work. In my area everyone says you need a 450 to power a sled kit.

Actually this is not mine (belongs to GG's local importer) but I can assure that 250 two-stroke is certainly sufficient in our area. Things may be different in steep mountains with deep powder-like snow.

I rode a few different bikes kitted with the Explorer a few years ago at a demo day; 3 450s and 1 250 2t.
It was fresh powder, but no real big hills etc., mostly open fields.

Given a choice, I'd want at least a 450, or a 300 2t on these, or better yet a CR/KX500.
The 250 2t worked, but you had to keep it well on the pipe. At that rate, you would go thru top ends quite often.

At any rate, these things are a hoot; they corner like nothing else and if you fall off, it's nice and soft!
You quickly learn to pick your places to voluntarily dismount, because if you hop off in powder, the seat level will be at your chest, or higher & have fun getting back on. Ask me how I know....:o

Upstate New York Winter Riding

In the mid 70's we had a Montessa shop located on the shore of a Oneida Lake in Upstate NY. In the winter we would plow a scrambles track close to the shore. Lower are suspension, screw are tires and race on the ice till late in the evening. The neighbors would start to complain about 11pm. Fortunately their was a tavern close by so we could come in and get warm and hydrate. Temps would range from 32 degrees to 0 degrees. After 2-3 years we had some spectators who would could watch us from the tavern. And buy us beer for the show. Those were the good old days. We would also try to ride snowmobile trails, great fun till you got off them. Average snowfall was about 180" a year. We learned not to drain your bladder, in case your carb froze wide open. Now we have studded tires and ride once or twice a year in the Coast Range. In 1987 we found the upper limits of a KX 500 was about 3' of snow and quite a work out. In the late 90's on a CR 250R w/ Recluse and studded Trelleborgs 2' of powder was the limit. God pity the rider following you, he had to work 3 times as hard to follow your lines. Going out MLK Day to do some trail work in the Trask. But being older and wiser I'm taking the Rokon. With 2' of hard pack snow and ice. It won't be pretty, but it's an excuse to go riding. Forest

God, that's sounds like a serious problem. Ever try to putting a sock around the beer to keep it from freezing? CheeseHead follower. Forest
