How often do you change the trans oil?

This is my first modern 2t and was just wondering at what kind of intervals folks were swapping their oil? Most of my riding is slow speed single track and rocky hill climbs.
I changed it once already and its very simple, but I wou;d like to hear some opinions from more 2t savvy riders here.

If you use an expensive bike specific oil (belray gear saver) then I would say every 10 hours if you use cheap oil for cars etc or ATF I would suggest a lot more often. Also depends if you were puttering around short shifting all the time or abusing your clutch on tight rocky trails

I reload the trans with Amsoil 10w40 motorcycle oil every six hours or sooner if I've abused the clutch to the point that it's been howling.

When bike is new I've always did the 1st 2 changes with 500Kms apart (at 500 and 1000). From this point on change at every 1000Kms or 1 year . The trans oil on a 2ST does not take a big punishment as in a 4ST because it works at lower temperatures, it will hold its properties for much longer.

BUT, there is no filter to remove clutch debris, and on a GG the oil can get contaminated with spooge oil from the right PV chamber, through the rod passage, where the trans vent is shared.

I once changed the oil of a local kid riding a 2008-09 MC250 GasGas. When I asked him when the last time he changed it he looked at me and said, "Its a 2 Stroke you don't have to change the oil in it." Unfortunately for that motorcycle it had been raced supercross and motocross for 3 years without so much as an oil change. There was very little oil left, but after a few quarts of oil that day, the shavings were gone and the bike is still running strong to this day as far as I know.

It is a lot like the guys who still change their oil in their $40,000 truck every 3,000 miles because that was what dad said to do. I think it is a bunch of BS and the Oil companies were the ones to start it. IMHO.

I usually run close to 9,000 before the oil meter says change me on my GMC. Also, our 2012 Buick, the initial oil change was not needed until 8,700 miles. A 2 stroke race bike is different, but the quality of oil and the tolerances are quite a step up from the 60s and 70s when these myths (I call them myths) were started.

Don't get me started on the guys running Amsoil... (Not trying to get the guys who run Amsoil mad, I am just a guy, who is not a mechanic, who sometimes overanalyzes things, and other times underanalyzes things)

Amsoil makes a great product, but you pay an awfully hefty premium to carry that name.

I would love to see the internals next to my bike running Spectro in the cases, and Arctic Cat Magnum Synthetic in the fuel 40:1. When I tore my bike down this winter it hadn't been rode in nearly 2 months, and there was a nice light pink glaze on the crank and around the piston. No signs of wear or any burnt oil. That was running 40:1, I think that 50:1 would probably be better and less spooge but I hate changing a good thing. I get a little chatter from the clutch, but then I just know that I am using the clutch too much on my 300, and just a few hundred feet of correctly using my torque and the clutch has quieted down.

I change my oil maybe once every 15-20 hours and get next to new oil out of it, and I do not ride nice. My 240 pound posterior works that poor clutch and oil quite hard. I mainly change the oil just to make sure there is still oil and it hasn't developed a leak somewhere.

Rotella T 15w40 change every three to four rides or after any race. Im running Opti2 at 80:1. Rotella is super cheap and it gives me a chance to escape the wife and kids for an hour (5 minutes to change the oil and 55 minutes of tinkering). :D

You use Rotella T 15w 40 in your tranny? The synthetic or regular Rotella ? I ve always used it in everything else, but didnt know it was safe for the tranny.....cool. Presently im running Belray 80w amd change every 6-8 hrs. Will probably change more often though as ive seen lots of metallic on magnet and i like using my clutch....hehe

I keep a camelbak full of Rotella T6 15W40 so that I can stop every 4 hrs and change my oil/have a smoke while on the trail. The tube fits perfectly into the fill port and the forestry service doesnt seem to mind me dumping a quart of oil on the ground every 40 mi...

10-15 hrs, T6, slow trail riding, light clutch abuse, on the pipe as much as possible.

And no, im not serious about the camelbak and exxon valdez in the forest!

10 four on the dezel oil. 10-30 & 15-40 in just about everything I own. The GG tranny is just like a Honey Badger. "Honey Badger don't care":D
