I once changed the oil of a local kid riding a 2008-09 MC250 GasGas. When I asked him when the last time he changed it he looked at me and said, "Its a 2 Stroke you don't have to change the oil in it." Unfortunately for that motorcycle it had been raced supercross and motocross for 3 years without so much as an oil change. There was very little oil left, but after a few quarts of oil that day, the shavings were gone and the bike is still running strong to this day as far as I know.
It is a lot like the guys who still change their oil in their $40,000 truck every 3,000 miles because that was what dad said to do. I think it is a bunch of BS and the Oil companies were the ones to start it. IMHO.
I usually run close to 9,000 before the oil meter says change me on my GMC. Also, our 2012 Buick, the initial oil change was not needed until 8,700 miles. A 2 stroke race bike is different, but the quality of oil and the tolerances are quite a step up from the 60s and 70s when these myths (I call them myths) were started.
Don't get me started on the guys running Amsoil... (Not trying to get the guys who run Amsoil mad, I am just a guy, who is not a mechanic, who sometimes overanalyzes things, and other times underanalyzes things)
Amsoil makes a great product, but you pay an awfully hefty premium to carry that name.
I would love to see the internals next to my bike running Spectro in the cases, and Arctic Cat Magnum Synthetic in the fuel 40:1. When I tore my bike down this winter it hadn't been rode in nearly 2 months, and there was a nice light pink glaze on the crank and around the piston. No signs of wear or any burnt oil. That was running 40:1, I think that 50:1 would probably be better and less spooge but I hate changing a good thing. I get a little chatter from the clutch, but then I just know that I am using the clutch too much on my 300, and just a few hundred feet of correctly using my torque and the clutch has quieted down.
I change my oil maybe once every 15-20 hours and get next to new oil out of it, and I do not ride nice. My 240 pound posterior works that poor clutch and oil quite hard. I mainly change the oil just to make sure there is still oil and it hasn't developed a leak somewhere.
