I hate my EC200

I'm not having much luck with it at all :(... I sorted out the oil leak I had, went out on my bike a few weeks ago with no problems. Went out last Sunday and the bike locked up on me in second gear, and it was quite a push back to the trailer! (at least I could take it out of gear to push it)

Anyways, I took the right side off as I thought the kick start gear had popped off -hoping more like.... but no turns out that's fine and looking up the exhaust hole it looks like the piston is scored to hell.

Anyways I decided to put it back together and leave it for a while... I'm a bit baffled where this white washer/seal goes does it push into the case then the other seal next to it on top then the impellor?

On the manual it doesn't show a white washer/seal...

Also the fact that they seem to be extinct and a lack of parts available for them is a reason why I'm hating it atm...

Don't suppose there are any non GG engines that fit in an 2001 EC is there  (I can't even find a 300 engine!)

Thats the two components of the water pump seal, and a very sorry looking plastic impeller that may be your problem. There is a washer that lays over the bearing, then the ceramic white ring in its rubber retainer(not shown) get pressed in, The spring loaded cup and graphite ring go around the shaft, and the dynamic seal is formed between the graphite and ceramic. This is a high speed industrial pump seal, not a typical MC water pump. Consult the parts manual.

Sorry to hear, I loved my '02 200, never missed a beat & just last night I was trying to talk a mate into buying it as the guy I sold it to has it up for sale.

You don't say where you are located, but from my desk in New Zealand I've never had issues finding parts. One of our local wreckers is listing motor parts.

Wiseco pistons are cheap & easy to find,

try Go fasters website in US. He's good to deal with & knows his stuff & should be able to get anything.

Pull the jug off & have a looksee. There are manuals downloadable & they are easy to work on. If it looks scored perhaps some debris has gone through the engine. Worst case a replate will fix any barrel damage, they can weld up grooves.

Nobody likes pushing a bike but it is a machine & if maintained & fed oil at the right times, should be reliable.

Have you tried ebay? its smeared with parts. But many sites will sell rod kits & all sorts. Easy to rebuild a 2 stroke.

Thanks GMP

I do love the EC200, just fixing one thing then getting another problem gets annoying >.>

I'm from the UK, also beginning to think the person I bought it off didn't really look after the engine (the whole frame etc is spotless, no rust or anything) and some of the gaskets seem to of been reused...

I'll have to try and get something from the US and hopefully the tax grabbing UK customs don't rape me too hard.

Why go to the US and pay the import charges when you can ring gasgasuk and have the part the next day?

In the Uk engines tend to be ignored in favor of bling... Ive had to correct lots of previous owner engine faults that should have been part of regular maintenance, whilst the rest of the bike is dripping in anodised parts..

Give Dave at Biketech a call, he'll have everything in stock and talk you through the problems and how to solve them. His delivery service is first class and you'll have the parts next day. 01225 765765

Took the cylinder off (with ease) and on top of the crankshaft there is what looks like a bit of metal or a stone. Maybe it magically appeared as I was taking the cylinder off I do not know... The cylinder itself does't seem to of been damaged that badly if at all, looks like it just needs a rehone in all honesty.

I tried to turn the clutch, it didn't move - I'm guessing the crankshaft has seized? I also tried putting it in gear and moving it to see if there was any movement with the piston/clutch and nothing.

I'm debating whether to get the whole thing rebuilt or not, I do like the bike and it is in good condition. Just knowing my luck, the casings willl be FUBAR. Then I'm going to be back to square one with what to do with it.

Ive been offered a GG 400 FSE, I think it is, but I'm not sure I want to gamble on another engine/bike

Pull it apart & fix what you have. The GasGas engines are quite reliable & there isn't a lemon among them. . . with one exception. The 400 4 banger. Well maybe there is a bigger story there but I wouldn't touch one.

Sounds like one of your main bearings is toast, my 03 250 did the same thing last year, I doubt your cases are messed up I'd get it rebuilt.
They're extremely tough bikes but nothing last forever :)

Yeh one of the mains have gone, it's been checked over and everything is fine other than the bearing >.< it's getting fixed. I asked if there was anything else I should splash out for while its in bits and he said everything is in pretty much tip top shape :)

That ignition side crank bearing has been a common failure amongst the earlier bikes. Before reassembly, it may pay to make sure the cases are perfectly aligned and that the bearing seats aren't too tight. I have suffered from this failure on one of my old gassers. It took a few bearing failures before it got resolved. The first one happened with very little time on the bike.

Oh dear! Hopefully the guy I got to get it sorted done it properly then

Anyways, it lives again. I'm glad I didn't get rid :)

as i noticed it's not a typical MC seal... when installing new seals and ceramic is it normal that this spins with some resistance (when side cover is off and spun with hand on the shaft) and some light scraping noise?
its still dry as it hasn't seen any fluids yet...
so the actual sealing between gearbox and coolant is obtaned by the friction between the ceramic (white?) ring and graphite (wich is part of the outer sealing)? correct?
and when installing the sealing (under the impeller) you just push it onto the shaft and thats it? or do i push the underside somewhat into the cases?

thanks, Hannes.

You should search my threads ive started I had this exact same thing happen but it was the bearing pressed into the case that failed and tanked my engine 2 years ago on my nambo with only 10 hrs on it. I'll look for the post cause I had some detailed pics of what happened as well

Hi anthGG

i use gasgas uk they are very good with parts and next day dlivery and are helpful and friendly.
i had a big end lock up after boging out in a 4x4 pit, simplybearing uk, had them in stock and was a bit cheaper. got the numbers wrote down some were
i was lucky with the bore tho

My 250 xc locked up last weekend, so I'm looking at the same thing, but I don't really have the knowledge to fix it. I have replaced 2 stroke top ends but I don't have the knowledge to figure out why it locked up and how to prevent it from happening again.

How does a GG 200 compare to a KTM 200 in power delivery? I really like KTM 200 motors, and might just look for a GG 200 for my bike or for a used 200 and have a parts bike rather than fix my 250.
