Jetting and Spooge

Hi all, new to Gas Gas and jetting a 2 stroke. I have a 2014 300 and stock my bike ran very on/off. It would made mediocre power down bottom and then just hit into the powerband and take off too abruptly. At the advice of several on the forum I changed to a Suzuki NEDW needle. I can say it has really transformed the bike and it now makes smooth linear power with awesome mid range and top end. I added a 50 tooth rear sprocket so some of that gain could be from the gearing.

On stock jetting the bike would have a line of spooge out of the tail pipe, with the new needle there is no spooge drip (couple of light spots). It also sounds very tinny. I am not a jetting expert, but is this a sign that I am running too lean? Or is this a sign that I am in the ballpark? It idles and rev's good, and maybe it is just because of the low ambient temp (37F)that day it is running a tad lean? I do not have the patience nor the skill to constantly change out and test different jetting, but I don't want to run too lean either.

I ran same oil mix 50:1 as before, so only explanation can be jetting. Should I have some kind of spooge visible? If this is a sign of running too lean would moving the clip down one spot potentially resolve the issue?

I had to go to a 180 main and a 42 pilot in this cool weather and actually it is still a bit lean

You may be running a tad lean, but I think you are ok. Lots of spooge means to rich or too fat. I wouldnt worry about it, but you can also play with the air screw to fatten up a bit.

Doesn't the air screw only effect 0-1/8th throttle?

Yep!

But it you want to fatten it up a bit, that is where I would start. Instead of changing jets. A 42 pilot is large enough and I think your main is large enough. The next thing would be go down one notch on the needle. But if this where me I would leave it alone

NECW#3 will put you half a clip richer if you wish to fine tune it.

With variations in elevation/temp/fuels/lubricants/riding ability/etc, its near impossible to jet over the net.

Usually its suggested not to jet for spooge, but to jet for response. If the bike is pulling well and not showing signs of running lean (hot, pinging, racing idle after load pulls, plug isn't frosty white/gray, surging, etc) then I'd say you're pretty good.

The best way to confirm is to adjust richer. You'll know if it was an improvement or not.

I would suggest to err on the rich side, knowing your transfer sections. Slightly rich = better grunt, lugging, and roll on power. Try lowering the clip one position, worst case it starts to blubber then you know it's too rich.
42 pilot 175/178 main should in the ball park.

Lowered the clip one slot just to be safe. No more hollow pinging in the mid range. Starts easier an comes to final idle faster.
