ktm faster, oh dear

My gearing is 13 / 48 stock what came on my bike and it seems to work fine and has a top speed of 60mph flat out.

,
Curious what will be the effect with 13 / 52 gearing and would it change the top speed? if so more or less speed?

Ron

For me top speed is absolutely meaningless. What is important is not having to drop into 1st gear when getting into the tight stuff, or at least as little as possible.

+1 on that.

good, if the ktm should feel quicker then my bike doesn't have a problem. I was just a bit surprised when I rode it, but I think for the trails I like to ride I'd be much slower on the ktm.

However I would like a bit more bottom, but I like being able to hang on to a gear through the lumpy stuff before I get to a corner. Would I notice 2t on the rear, or is there another cheap way.

Do you have a LTR Powervalve cover? If not, get one. Makes a huge difference on the 200.

The gearing I have now works well for me and I rarely use 1st unless I screw up and need to get it going. Thats one of the reasons I ride the 200 because its easier for me to keep rolling through the tight stuff, then always after a tight section they give you a fast section so my whole race strategy is to gap them in the tight and maintain gap until next section and so on.. till the end.

Ron,

I have also switched bikes with a buddy who has a KTM EXC 200 and I too feel that the GasGas 200 is a little down on overall brute power, but I feel the GasGas 200 power is more rider usable over the long haul, able to chug down low in a tight turn and power out very smoothly, or a flick of the clutch will get it singing to the moon if need be. My 99 has the OEM Messico pipe which I prefer over the FMF, which I have tested back to back and have stayed with the Messico...even though it is paper thin, I like the motor much better with the Messico. I run 13/51 final gearing also as mentioned. I am also using the thinest base gasket avaiable also. I do not have an LTR P/V cover, and I am very happy with the lowend, but I would like to try an LTR cover out before I toss the OEM, just for a seat in the pants back to back test run. My jetting is pretty standard LTR kit which I run all year, summer and winter and above 3500ft elevation.

A few weeks back at the D-36 Hare Scramble at HoneyLake, CA I posted my best finish to date in the "C" Senior, 5th in class for a 7th overall. Honey Lake is right a 4000ft elevation and I layed a a$$ kick'in on a ton of 450's. So I know that a 200 can run with those time bombs:rolleyes:

I'm not actually worried which bike has more power, just thought they'd feel the same, and then wondered if I had a problem with mine.

So now thats cleared up, what gearing are you guys running on your 200's and for what sort of riding?
