new body work on older bike?

Anyone tried to put the newest body work (plastic/seat) for the gasgas on an older model? Say like 2010 bodywork on a 2005 bike? Just curious... thanks

'07 is the oldest you can upgrade due to the completely different subframe and tail design on the pre '07 bikes.

gmp..
so if you upgrade an older one (say like my 01) you would need a subframe, air box, plastic of course, a seat, and a fuel tank..
is that it ?

I don't think you can upgrade the new tail/subframe on anything older than '05. It might work but I can't say. I do know that an '05+ is easy as the seat tank are the same.

Yes, '10 and '11 plastic go on '07-'09 with a rear airbox panel change:

Thus question comes up often in various forms. It might be good to post know good conversion options/detailed chassis changes over the years and make a sticky.

Well I guess you answered your own question! Thats a nice job! I would say the tank, seat, and all plastic. I'd like to see how the new tank fits in the old frame up close before I bought one. Also your exhaust may have to be tweaked, and the use of an '07+ silencer, or bend the stinger of the old one to fit on the new subframe is a must. The '00-'02 frame was a good turner, better than my '03. While the flatter seating position on the '07+ is very nice, it will be an expensive project unless you find a part out. I'd want Zoke forks as well if I was going that far.

yeah.. it is kinda just a dream if i could find a part out..
missed a great bike here not to long ago, gasgasmans 01 250 with full ohllins was for sale here local... and tons of guards mine does not have also..
could have bought the bike, swapped it all, and resold it for about the same money..

imagine the 300, full ohlins, all guards, 07 up plastics..

So... sounds like on my 06 I would need the air box cover and the new plastic but not another tank, seat or rear sub frame. Is that correct? I am most interested in the rear/side panel update. Thanks!

(here's a pic of the current bike...)

Yes, entire tail section, and silencer. It was about $800 ('07 $) in new parts plus silencer.

While I'm all for cool projects for the passion of it, you have to reconsider this for an '01. The used bike price eventually bottoms out, you could sell the '01, and buy a nice used '07/'08 for only a couple K more, and be ahead in other areas like suspension, frame strength in the peg area, and less overall wear/time on everything.

This is a very good point.

Well, I'm not spending that much to change out parts that have nothing wrong with them. Thanks for laying that idea to rest (for me anyway). I was thinking more like $100 for new plastic.

Is it a straight swap to fit the new style rad shrouds to the older bikes ?

This would give more choice for graphics!
I had a beautiful set of 02 shrouds that I wanted to put on my 07gasser but the holes didn't line up so I went with 2010 shrouds instead. Based on that experience I would say the 07-11 shrouds do not fit the 01-04 bikes without modification.

Ive just completed a plastick update on my 02 ec 300, i went with 09 front fender, and tank shrouds, and the 10 rear panels.

The tank shrouds just bolted straight up to the existing holes and needed no modification, the rear end needed a newer style subframe, i used an 08, an 08 style airbox, although i had to make a few modifications to make the 10 rear mudguard fit, but it was just a case of fabbing up a small panel inside to make it water tight, and a 08 seat, which i put a new seat cover on, all the parts i managed to source secondhand, some of them even coming from Spain! All in, i managed to get it done for just over a ?120, but i think its worth it as it completely updates the look of the bike, im planning on stripping the bike in the spring to replace all bearings and generally go through the bike and whilst its all apart im going to get the frame powdercoated black as well as the swingarm, which should make the bike last another 9 years!!:D
