New era rear wheel washer

What is the orientation of the new version of the rear wheel washer?
It looks like a 3mm steel washer, with a smaller o.d 1mm washer attached to one side.
Does the smaller part face into the hub or out towards the sprocket?
The smaller face is the same o.d as the i.d of the outer bearing that the spacer sits in.
I think that makes sense.

I understand how the old flatter washer works, but this one is different, also its steel not aluminium, which is an improvement.

Does it go in with the smaller portion sitting in the larger bearing with the wheel spacer against it like so

Or the other way around as cbutler stated

It goes from inner race to inner race and acts as a spacer no matter which way you flip it. I can't see why it would make a bit of difference which way you put it unless one way is easier to install. Probably with the inner step towards the inside so you can stick it in place with grease so it will stay while you install the 2nd bearing.

I got one of those but couldn't see how it fitted as the resulting gap is way larger than the original ali one.
I just used the old one beaten flat.no worries

I have no experience with the new one ... but know that if you put the old in backwards/incorrectly the wheel will no spin as it should. It binds and drags when the axle nut is tightened down.

I put it together backwards with respect to how bergerhag stated. It doesnt bind and spins freely, however the wheels with spacers was slightly tighter in the swingarm. I rode the bike yesterday and it was fine all day.
The old flat spacer was toast and would bind up regardless of which orientation it had. Cost about $23 for the new steel washer spacer thing, I also replaced both the wheel spacers too, was ~100NZD for all 3 parts.

My washer is worn, can the newer washer be used with the 04's as the dealer only has the new one or can i add a thin copper washer to the existing one? Hoping my hub is not a problem as it took me longer to get the axle out. Bearings took 2-3 taps each and then they were out, in all 10-15 min to strip everything.

I recently replaced my bearings and yes the smaller washer faces the sprocket and mates up with the wheel spacer

Yes. I got one and installed it in a 18" 2000 wheel with 03 bearings so I could just swap wheels on my MC 250 and not worry about getting different bearings.
