new to me 300!

woohoo! i convinced my brother to trade me a 99 ec300 he had intended on parting out. it looks bone stock to me, it has some issues (stuck trans). i won't get it for a week or so (he's in michigan, i'm in wv) - i';ve only seen pics and heard it run over the phone :)

i would assume the trans is stuck because of 1 of 3 things:
worn shift barrel or shift forks
worn scorpion
worn shift shaft

hopefully it will be very obvious once i open it up.

anyways, i'm more interested in setting the suspension than anything else. it's got right side up forks on it (marzochi's i assume?) i also assume these can be set up to work as well as the usd wp's?? i'll probably just send them out to ltr and let him do his magic.

lastly, i know this has been answered in the past, but, how much different is the 300 motor than the 200 motor? i know it's slower to spin up and more luggable. is it a handful at race pace? i kinda regret selling my rekluse, as the 300 motor may be much more suitable for it....

is the 99 motor a counterbalancer motor?

sorry for all the questions!

I"m not sure if the motor is a c/b? ...but I don't think so.

I see it has a Messico pipe:D You better hang on to that....

Ditch those 45 Zokes....slap on a set on USD Zokes or WP's and she'll rock!

Those old 45 Zoke's will work...but they tend to get "dirty" quick...soft outter tubes. LTR tuned mine up once, then I ditched them, for a set of 43 WP's off of an 03 300. I bought the complete front end and bolted it right up! I had to replaced the axle, bearing and spacers and brake caliper. The 99 will have a Bermbo, newer set up will use Nissin.

That bad boy has the OEM silencer to boot....

The 300 will pull tree stumps out of the ground....the 200 will only spin.

Nice find!

His loss your gain!

thanks for the suspension tips. i'll try to mod them first - i have a similar set of zokes on a morini camel, so i know what to expect....

so i picked up the bike today. took the clutch cover off and noticed there was no oil in the trans. no wonder it didn't shift. i filled it up, and it shifts fine.

now:

this thing rips. jetting is right on, i only get a hint of breaking up at the top of the rev range, should be pretty easy to jet.. the messico pipe with stock silencer is great at all rev ranges. don't know why anyone would change it out. i can see how the 300 would be too much in the tight woods. throttle control is much more crucial... also it turns like ass, i'm assuming swapping usd wp's in for the conventional zokes will make a world of difference. the 200 feels lightyears ahead in handling and nimbleness. funny how they have the same chassis, but the 200 feels so drastically different -surely usd forks setup by ltr helps a bit :) and not worrying about whiskeythrottling it outta turns. i can crank the 200 for all it's worth coming outta a turn and not get tossed. the 300 on the other hand would spit me off the back.. this 300 does have a steady even power delivery, with no noticeable hit.

it'll take some time to figure out the 300, but i can see plusses and minuses compared to the 200. they are surprisingly different. my 200 has 2k1 ignition, and the 300 has a 2k3 ignition - i might swap that out for a another 2k1 ignititon i have here...

You said it has a 2K3 stator?!?? Are you sure it is a 99? I thought all the
GasGas bikes through 1999 had the ducati stator. I certainly could be wrong though.
When you have the stator cover off, you should be able the see if it is a c/b motor
or not.
Like everyone else said, "Nice find" With the suspension set up it should be
an all around great bike.
