Newbie, looking for info on the '06 EC 300

I'm talking with the owner of this bike:

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/2006-Gas-Gas-EC-300-/120790099403

He says it's been raced and trail ridden, but is otherwise ready to go and doesn't need any immediate maintenance.

Since I'm new to the GG community, I've done a ton of searches, and every pic I come up with shows the '06 as being blue with lights; was there a version available WITHOUT lights? Is it more likely that a previous owner removed the lights, and swapped red bodywork for the stock blue?

The owner says the harness is there for lights. Are lights (front/rear) and speedo assy available? Maybe KTM or other brand parts can bolt up? Would this model have the switch to change the ignition mapping?

From what I've read, the EC 300 is the optimum bike for me, but I'd like it to have lights.

My bio: Raced motocross and hare scrambles in Michigan during the late 70's and thru the 80's, last dirt bike owned was an '87 CR250. Gettin' that midlife-crisis everytime I look at my 25-yr old gear bag and box of trophies.

Be afraid, be very afraid........JK Welcome to the group! I have a 2006 EC250. To my knowledge all the 2006 ECs came with lights, as long as no one has put an MC ignition on then the harness should be there to hook up lights again. I don't believe that KTM lights will connect directly but a soldering iron, wiring diagram & heat shrink will allow you hook whatever light you want up. There very well may be someone on here that has the GG lights that would be willing to part with them or for that matter, the original parts are probably still available from GoFasters
My EC250 came with the MAP switch, but I'm not sure when the MAP switch came to be standard nor on which models.
I come from a similar background as you and I LOVE my Gassers (I have three of them) The 300 is a super mount for a lot of uses. This forum is full of VERY knowledgeable GG owners and they are very helpful with information. Have fun

Ditto on the addiction! It's a sweet addiction though, but not easily kicked!!

Bought a 97' Gasser, then upgraded to a 07' now I'm on the look out for a 11' or maybe the 12'?

I bought a brand new out of the crate 06 250 and it didn't come with a headlight but it did come with a tail light....I put lights on it and a Trailtech Endurance Speedo which worked very well.

Yes, it should have a mapping switch.

Thanks for all the warnings, I go thru these addictions at a regular pace (mtn bikes, snowboarding, 4x4's,etc), so I'm familiar with where it may lead me...

Like i said, dirt bikes were a BIG part of my life BEFORE marriage and children, but I've always had that little voice in the back of my head, and now my boy's are getting to the age, and I ain't gettin' any younger, etc.

So back to this bike: If it IS a 2006 EC 300, it should've been blue, with lights and speedo, is that correct? I'm having trouble getting info from the owner, and I have not seen the bike in person.

With no identifying graphics, is there an identifier on the engine (base of cyl?) that will positively identify the year/displacement of this bike?

It's out-of-state, so I'll have to have it shipped, but the price seems like a good deal, even without the lights (which I can swap in later).

You should be able to tell from the engine numbers if it at least has a 300 bottom end. Engine number is just behind the gear shifter.
The chassis number should tell you which model it was.
I have an 06 EC300 and apart from the red plastics the main differences I can see are;
Seat looks like it has been raised
Kick start looks like off a YZ?

The red switch just inboard of the throttle looks like the ignition mapping switch, which the '06 should have had.

I wouldn't be without my EC300, my next bike will be a newer EC300, (wife just doesn't know it yet):D

One of the many 300 Gas Gas' Ive owned over the years
Here are some pics of my 06 300 before I sold it. It was a great machine.
The Bikes imported into the U.S. then were actually DE's (dealer editions)although they had EC stickers on them. They had no lights and had the MX # plate but were equipped with the lighter 2k2 ignition so adding enduro lights was plug and play.

The 300 was only offered in blue from the factory. This was the second year of them being equipped with the DID dirt star standard rims that were lighter but not nearly as strong as the previous Did U rims of the 04 bikes. It was the first year of the factory supplying the bike with the 2 stage ignition switch, the 05 ignition was the same as the 06 so the owner could add the switch to make it functional.

Why would somebody raise the seat? I guess if he had super-long legs, but I'm guessin' that will be a problem with me.

Did your friend have any info on it other than what was in the auction? I talked to a tech at the shop, says it WAS raced, but he (the tech) just replaced the linkage bearings, and rebuilt the front master. The owner put new plastic on it, and it has aftermarket pegs. He said the owner worked for Amsoil, so I HOPE he was aware of the benefit of regular maintenance using his fine product...

not really, as far as info goes.. i watch for gg's alot, so does he. that dealer sells a few and i have talked to him a time or two on some.. the guy i talked to seems pretty smart..
he called me right as the auction was going off.. i had seen it that week.
then he missed it by 25.00.....
it sure needs a pipe and he was not trying to hide that.. my 300 has been as reliable as an anvil.. i think you bought a good bike at a good price..

Yeah, looking at past prices, and comparable prices for Jap and KTM models, I think I got a good deal.

You think that pipe will cause real performance problems, or do you think it's just ugly?
