Back in 2000 or so, KTM came out with a blue Jack Piner Edition 200.
They were hard to sell.
Fast foward to 2012. KTM makes a blue bike and now it's the best thing since sliced bread and selling like hot cakes.
What gives?

Farringer and Laffertys' recent results in the NEPG races is what gives. I think if I buy some blue plastic for my 2010 KTM 300XCW I will automatically pick up my speed. After all, its' the same bike as the new Husaberg save the cc forks.

That blue KTM 200 was celebrating the 25th anniversary of the Penton Jackpiner in 1997? If I remember right, it was a $1000 more than the standard bike. Most people were unwilling to pay the money.

Now, if you have one of those bikes that has never been ridden, you'll get your money back, plus some.

The Jack Pine edition had a full-on Ohlins shock (apparently they had done the initial PDS development) as compared to the standard 200s WP legs, and supposedly replacement blue plastic was available only to owners of the special edition bikes. If memory serves correct Dirt Rider did a feature on the JP.

JP

Pretty sure it was 98' and that was right when they started to get real popular.

Released with the 98's in aug of 97 as a 97,, the JP edition was a low production.. like 200 built total? I know where one is and he wont sell it to me.. which is good cause I dont have the cash.. I wanted it then and still do now..

one showed up here today...

i think the new husaberg two strokes are basically rebadged ktm's.
the husabergs are blue. is that what you are talking about?

Yea, thats what hes talking about. Husa's are just the exc/xcw frame and engine, with a slightly bigger tank, CC forks, and blue plastics.

Shouldn't be a problem with 2stroke sales. Its the 450 glut thats the real issue for the mfgs.

I have a buddy who just bought a new TE300. I got to ride it today. You can say what you want but it is a very nice bike. I think I would have opted for the 2012 KTM 300 xc over the berg. I can not say I would be any faster on one than the other though. I still like my 2011 GG 300.

The biggest advantage the KTM/Berg has stock are the forks. They are much better than the GG. I have not ridden a race model with the 48cc forks. If they are as good as reported that should help GG a lot.

Obviously the older frame has not held the pros back.

The KTM 200 JackPiner did have the Ohlins shock, however the Ohlins shock used a different valving system than the later WP PDS shock which used the pin type system to control bottoming. I heard that the JackPiner suspension was much better than the setup on the regular KTMs.
