Pulling the trigger on a new xc300e

Coming over from the orange side:) I should take delivery on my new Gasser by the end of the month. It's easy to put a long list of upgrades to do on a new bike. My question for those that have gone before me...what do I need to get going or soon after? I am thinking radiator guards (I like bulletproof). Correct springs for my weight. does ARC make levers for the bike?
My initial goal is to make the bike reasonably crash damage resistant, followed by getting the suspension dialed. Your input appreciated.

Congrats on coming over! I'm not really knowledgeable enough or qualified to give you any opinions or direction, but I do want to welcome you over!

I love my 13, and I'd love to have a 15...

First thing will be jetting. The factory jetting is pretty bad and the bike is somewhat hard to ride with the N1EF needle. UNabiker makes really nice radiator guards and braces. Other than that just Ride It!! Also remember to check and re torque all the nuts and bolts after a few rides. Especially the spokes front and rear

That is great news John, glad to have you on the team! Don't forget I'm a social media junkie so get me some pictures with your new bike!

Select brand of rad braces and that is all these bikes really need.

If you opt to replace the plastic OEM skid/bash plate there are a few choices, but the OEM one will hold up for a decent amount of time.

If you are the kind of person who likes carbon fibre pipe guards I'd recommend the propower, or failing that a P3. Avoid the cheapy options. OEM pipe is much thicker than the orange counter parts, and as such the pipe as a whole does tend to last much longer (within reason).

40 pilot, n3cj needle from Yamaha yz250 or ktm, 175 main jet, you can then fiddle with the power valve and get it completely seemless power wise. Slice the water drain in the air box and slip in some tubing so it drains better. Change the brake fluid and coolant, they are crap. Set the shock to the medium stock position and leave it alone, set 102 to 105 mm of sag, move the bars to position 3, get the forks revalved after 10 hrs to a smaller float with softer stack on the mid (.4 to .5) and ride, be surprised at how good it rails ruts and climbs hills. Enjoy.

+1 on the ProPower pipe guard & everything Simmo noted.
I went NEDW #3,40,175 with great results.
Screamed past my mate on his 2014 Husky 300 in rutty sandy soil & he had NOTHING! still smiling.

Thanks for the info!

Thanks so much for all the ideas. I thought I would have to fiddle with jetting. I will order those needles. I typically ride 1,000-4,000 elevation and on occasion up to 7,000

I have the bullet proof guards on mine now, should have done that years ago.

Give Richard Wilson a call before you pull the trigger about some mods to do on the 15's, he is brilliant and has a lot to say about getting the most out of your Gasser.

Welocme to the 2015 Team!

Just saw the PDI come thru today...

Welcome to the team John and thank you for buying a Gas Gas. Your gonna love that bike. Please PM me your e-mail addy, and don't forget I need pictures of you and the bike for our Facebook, (if that's OK with you)

Again, thank you for choosing Gas Gas and Geoff Cardoza at Moto City as your dealer!!!

My KTM sold very quickly, so later that day last Monday I was out to Moto city to pick up the Gasser.
I got to say that is one neat bike! For whatever reason I poked around on the softer map for the first two rides. The jetting seemed a bit off but still that motor is so nice. Setting the sag only proved what I already knew, I need heavier springs.
I changed the pilot to a 40 and installed a NECW needle in the middle position, (not sure that's the best needle but way better than stock).
Third ride out on some familiar trails and single track. That bike rips! The handling is great even with the wrong springs, looking forward to getting it dialed.
I have the uni biker radiation guards on the way and will most likely order springs from Richard Wilson very soon.
I would like to put the arc Memlon levers on the bike, their website doesn't list gas gas. Anyone have luck with them.
The bodywork is so good looking, and it seems a shame to peel off the graphics on the number plates, I am considering ordering extra plastics and preserving the originals. It looks like Polisport makes the OEM is there another source or just order from dealer?
Anyone have a source for number backgrounds and custom graphics? Again I don't see to many companies making stuff for that bike.
I understand there is a fix for the kickstand?
The battery hanging from the seat? There has got to be a better way. I was thinking of making something that spans the subframe which can carry the battery box, so I can remove the seat then the battery with some sort of quick disconnects for the cables. Any thoughts?
The bike seems a little harder to work on than the some of my previous bikes, that may just be learning curve on my part.
I didn't get a tool kit with the bike. What tools are recomended for the trail?

To fix the side stand, tap the tab on the frame that the spring mounts to forward and remove either the inner or outer spring, they offer different levels of return, this stops the snap back and reduces the severity.

Standard jap trail tools but add a 13mm box end for rim locks (or change them), buy a 22/27 axel spanner that has a spark plug spanner on reverse side of 22mm , i dare say gofasters will have them. Enjoy.

Update on new bike

So I have had my new 300 a bit less than a month now. With the help of you guys on the forum I have got the bike pretty well dialed in.
I got springs from Richard Wilson at House of Horsepower....aside from getting the proper rates he advised a Proggresive spring in the forks as well as changing the cartridge spring to a lighter one. Although I was a bit skeptical about the progressive spring recommendation I went with it. I have to say the bike handles like a dream!
I also installed the N3CJ needle and tweaked the power valve a bit, the bike really rips but in a controllable way. Did the side stand fix, easy.
I installed the Memlon arc lever on the front brake side, however haven't got a answer from Arc as to what clutch lever would work. Does anyone know if the lever that is one the AJP clutch is a copy of some standard lever?
Again what a awesome bike, I see why you guys hang on to these bikes so long.

Bike Graphix will make anything you want for that bike and they do beautiful work. Just give them a call and tell them what you want. Prices are good too.
