Shipping suspension

What is the most cost-effective way to ship both my forks and shock? I'd rather not purchase a gun case b/c of the expense. Can I get away w/ a shipping box for a guitar maybe? And what is the AVERAGE cost for shipping these together? Is UPS good? Trying to budget here...thanks.

I used a cardboard box and carved out some styrofoam blocks to let the suspension fit in very snugly. I've also used a wooden crate with the forks and shock well padded.

I just ship my cartridges and base valves, and shock without spring. Saves a lot. Of course, this is between you and your tuner. Some guys will only work with an entire component, so they have control over the final result.

I used a 4' fluorescent lamp box with corner reinforcements and wrapped each fork leg in bubble wrap and then wrapped them both in an old quilt and stuffed them in the box. I put the shock in it's own box in bubble wrap and sealed it in a plastic bag so the leaking oil wouldn't get the UPS driver freaked out. Made it from Minnesota to the west coast and back without a ding. Buy insurance for the amount of replacements though - just in case.

Good point. What are good values to use?

That depends on whether you have old beat up drooly WP's or shiny new Öhlins. I'd call a dealer and see what replacement costs would be and insure for as much of that figure as you can cost justify.

I bought a box at the shipping joint. Wrapped the forks in bubble wrap, the shock in bubble wrap put them in the box and filled the voids with styro foam peanuts. Insured both for $2500 or $3000, can't remember which. Factory connection sent them back in a nice box so I kept that one. I think I kept the box les sent them back to me to.
