Valve Clearance (Tolerance)

Right gave the bike a oil filter, air filter, spark filter change and still no improvement to the starting if anything its now harder

Timing clearance are as follows

Exhaust
0.25 0.3

Inlet
0.2 0.1(if anything, lower than 0.1 but couldn't measure any lower down)

Are these clearances within tolerence? Could they be causing the bad starting?

Im going to renew the starter this weekend hopefully but am unsure if I should go to the bother of re-shimming.

Only had the bike a short time and already its getting really frustrating.

I'm not sure of the tolerances but yes valve clearance definitely can be tied to bad starting and some other issues as well. That is one of the big reasons I got rid of my 4 stroke, shimming valves is a pia and just to much maintenance overall

Less than 0.1 does not sound good in my ears. I have never had a 4stroke GG, but none of my other bikes are supposed to have that low clearance. I think you run the risk of having a valve that does not close properly. Do you know for sure that there is a clearance at all?

Sent from my OMNIA7 using Board Express

You should shim them right away, I don't know the GG Spec, but less than 0,1 is not good for your engine:eek:, It will run too hot and destroy your head, it's much better if they were too loose.

It'll also help you, if you have starting problems.
Every time my old Honda 250f was hard to start, I knew I had a valve job coming:rolleyes:, one of the main reasons why I've switched to 2strokes:D.

right all valves sorted to the guidelines. but still difficult to start. the guy who helped me said the engine does feel heavy to turn so now im unsure if this engines a dud or gasgas engines are just stiff. Mine does have a slipper clutch though

getting a bit fed up with the bike now

They can be real frustrating when they dont run right. You might want to make sure that your cam chain isnt to loose and every thing is in time. Being a tooth off on your cam timing can cause drag. Check your tolerances after about 10 or so hours . You might have some damaged valve seats . If they are out of whack quickly that is a good indicator.

its an early one, 2002. already cleaned out the starter, brand new battery. full service. Ill check the chain, we noticed the tensioner was pretty much at full reach tbh.

would a slipper clutch be a cause? Im starting to suspect it
