Hey Guys,
Re-wiring a 2001 EC 300.

I've got this hanging off the frame, looks like its been bodged...

Anyone know what this is called/what is does? And is that loose black wire an earth for the device?

Its an AC voltage regulator, a simple diode "clipper" device . The yellow goes to the yellow stator output wire and black is gnd. On this year they failed fairly often. If you run without it you will likely loose headlight bulbs. Replace it with a Moose part or the newer OEM part that mounts to the coil bolt.

The Moose Racing part is generic. I would think something equivalent is available in the UK. Like I said the newer GG OEM parts are fine, and I'm sure there is a KTM option as well. I suspect the ones like on yours and my '00 250 failed due to heat, as they are confined in that hole in the frame.

Either one is more than adequate, and both vendors are excellent to deal with. They are also adjustable, fine but not really neccessary IMO. I guess they are all designed this way now.

12v AC voltage regulator in UK

Thanks GMP.

Any idea where i'd go looking to get one? (UK Based potentially?)

Hey Hicksi - I have the same issues and found one on Ebay (250755461056) - it's a bit more expensive than getting one from the states but including postage it's only ?17 ish (fast delivery too).
Got to be cheaper than a couple of headlight bulbs and tail bulbs too !!

Hope your bike's electrics are nearly there .... how's it going ??

AC regulator now fitted

Hi - further update - I received the AC regulator really quickly from the ebay seller. Next day actually.

Fitted it last night (only took half an hour with my trusty soldering iron) and hey ho - all seems to be working.

Was raining last night so couldn't do a road test but revving it up in the garage (with the doors open of course ) seems to have cured the bulb-blowing surge of AC ........ nice :D
