05 GasGas EC 250

I found a good deal on a 05 GasGas EC250 Enduro. I was wondering if someone could tell me a little about this bike? What would this year be worth? I own a 03 KTM300EXC and am thinking of upgrading to the newer, much better condition GasGas. How would these two bikes compare? Also I am 5'11", 220lbs and ride senior C enduros. I also ride Trials in the novice class.

I wouldn't know how to answer this without sounding biased...to me it would be a no brainer to buy the GasGas even if the KTM was an '05 too. An old riding buddy of mine had an '03 KTM300 that he spent a lot of time setting up for himself. When he got a ride on another buddies GasGas he soon sold the KTM and within a few weeks he was on a used '05 GasGas and has been happy ever since.

Has anyone registered a GasGas on here that lives in NY State? I was wondering how difficult it was. I need to have it registered to ride enduros.

I think in NY you can get an off road or ATV plate (red?), but then it can never be transferred to a full registration, correct? I'm in NJ and they got tough last year, only true DS bikes go through now. I got a VT reg and plate and have no problem in ECEA enduros.

Cngrats on the bike. I am also a former KTMer that would much rather be on my 06 EC250 than on a KTM.

This comment had me thinking, I've seen plenty of statements like this one but how many riders have you heard saying that they owned a GasGas and would much rather be on a KTM?

I picked up my EC250 yesterday, I rode it a little to break it in and didn't want to stop riding it :) The bike is awesome! I thought the power, suspension and handling were great, better than anything I have ever ridden before! I can't wait to get it broke in and ride it hard on the trails!
Just a couple of things I noticed:

1)I always check the air filter on a new or used bike (I like to grease the filter seal). I noticed that the air filter access was great but how water proof is it? I could see through the bottom of the air box where the drain is.
2) The CDI box is on the rear fender under the seat and there are two wires (orange and black) that are plugged into each other. Does that mean I have the dual map ignition? If so how does it work?
3) Gearing felt a little tall (13/48) but I have been riding only Trials for the last 10 years.
4) It came with a FMF FATTY pipe wouldn't a FMF Gnarly pipe be better for the woods?
5) Where can I get a skid plate and pipe guard for it?
6) I didn't get a owners manual (I will have to call the shop Monday). Can I set the speedometer from Kilometers to miles?

I took my 03 KTM300 out right after riding the GasGas and couldn't wait to get back on the GasGas! In the KTM's defense it's used (the GasGas is a new 05 leftover) and needs some work to be fresh again. I guess it's like comparing apples to oranges, I just prefer apples :D

What mixing oil and mixing ratio do most of you run in you GasGas's? I have Motorex oil that was recommended for KTM's, I think it's synthetic. Thanks.

1) There should be a flap across the drain in the airbox acting as a one way valve. I've never drowned my bike out.
2) Not sure, someone else know?
3) I run 13/50 on my 250, 13/52 on my 200.
4) Fatty and Gnarly are the same pipe, Gnarly is just made from thicker steel.
5) Hyde racing makes a great skid plate/pipe guard.
6) It is possible since my stuff is in miles. Can't remember how. There is a manual online.

I run 40:1 in all of my bikes with good results. Any two-stroke synthetic oil will work. Amsoil Dominator is popular.

#2 if you have the two wires (should be orange and black)connected your bike is in the "sunny" mode, you can buy the switch to change the mapping on he fly,or just if unplug them you will be in the "rainy" mode all the time

All you need to take advantage of the dual map CDI is an on/off toggle switch. I used a push button toggle switch from Radio Shack, some black speaker wire and a couple bullet connectors. I mounted my switch to the front brake master cylinder mount using a small piece of scap metal. I rarely switch to the SUN mode, but it't a thumb flick away. The only thing that stinks is that you don't know which mode your in by looking at it.

My gently used '05 250 has 13/50 gearing, and given the rocky, hairpinny hills we have around here, I might drop it to 51 or 52 when the sprocket needs changing.

The manual says 50:1 but Maxima says use 50:1 only in less taxing situations. I'll be using 40:1.

i was under the impression the gnarly wan not only thicker and tougher, but that it increased bottom end and cut off top end. but that the only differences between the stock ec pipes and the fatty pipes is finish and logos.<factory fatty>

The stock EC pipe is not the same as the Fatty. The EC pipe is manufactured by GasGas and is pretty close to the Messico pipe, only thicker. In the USA a lot of Gassers came stock with an FMF pipe a silencer.

The Gnarly is for bottom end, but supposedly (I've heard this from a few people) the Fatty and Gnarly are almost identical except for the steel thickness for construction.

I put a gnarly on mine b/c I smashed the stocker. it does add some bottom + a noticeable hit in the middle & does sign off a little earlier on top.

I bought some Motorex 2T (full synthetic) mixing oil for my KTM and will use it in my GasGas. One thing I don't like about it is after you mix it you can tell that it's mixed (no dye in it).
Haven't had much of a chance to ride my new GasGas but I really like it! The only problem I have had with it so far is the kick stand bolt fell out. Any other bolts I should locktite and go over and tighten?

What brand of handle bars does GasGas use on my 05 EC250? They look like pro tapers but it just says GasGas on them. I need to know so I can order hand guards. What is a good hand guard now a days?
