200 slow to rev

09 200 with 50hrs. OEM Exhaust, oversized PV cover. Jetted, well jetted sufficiently and no different than any other of my bikes.....(I think).

Since new this bike has always been really slow to increase RPMs off the bottom. I initially thought "this is just a 200 thing" but now I'm beginning to doubt this theory. Yes, it lacks bottom-end grunt but I suspect this is the norm (wife had a 00' GG200 years ago).

There is no sputter, bog or hiccup, just a delay to increase RPMs off idle. Once the RPMs hit the mid-range +- it behaves normally. This phenomenon happens anytime I'm coming off idle including after it starts and or with the bike already running and the clutch engaged.

If one was to watch a tachometer the RPMs would increase very very slowly from idle until mid-range and then once they hit they mid-range they would increase at a normal rate.

Any guesses?

Power valve and/or jetting. I would check for free play in the power valve linkage and get baseline jetting from someone here with a well jetted 200.
 
I ran into this a couple of years ago when I owned 2 EC200's at the same time.

The '99 was a much quicker reving bike and could come of the low revs quickly without issue. The '03 was a slow reving bike exactly how you described yours.

So, here's my conclusion. It's not jetting or PV. Both bikes were jetted same, same reeds, same PV cover, same gearing, very close to the same hours on topend. The only differences were in the flywheel and pipe.

The '99 had the lighter 2k2 and the '03 had the heavier 2k3, so I immediately determined that must be the difference. So, I switched them. The results were noticeable, but did not change the slow revs on the '03 and the '99 still revved quicker.

So, only thing left was the pipe. Both FMF, but lots of research and a call to FMF revealed that in the early days, the FMF pipe for the '99 200 was a Gnarly and mine on the '03 was a Fatty. They couldn't be switched do to fitting issues. In speaking with the folks at FMF and more research determined that the early Gnarly pipe was the difference maker. FMF no longer makes that older design Gnarly for the Gasgas, it's a different design now.

Also, some guys with the Messico pipes experienced the quicker reving as well.

One thing to try is going to real tight gearing. 12/52 was used by Billy Burns when he raced the 200.

I don't have any experience with 200 GG except for my '01 XC 200. All stock including the power valve cover. I did recently change out the old bent up FMF Gnarly with a new FMF Gnarly I found on Ebay ,cheap. Gearing is 13/52 with a 120/80 rear tire. And it has a 12 oz fww.

My local riding spot covers elevation from 3000 to 5000 ft. I'm very pleased with how well this engine pulls in the low to mid rpm. Plus a very smooth transition from low/mid/top end. Not in the least bit pipey.

When I got it, after doing necessary repairs including a top end job, I was very disappointed after my first ride. The bike felt more like a 125 mx'er than anything. Not at all what I was looking for. Weak and ratty sounding on the bottom, then pulling hard thru the mid & top end.

After doing some reading, on this forum mainly, I installed a pilot jet just one step richer, readjusted the air screw & idle screw and it was like a different bike. It was amazing what a difference just one step on the pilot jet made.

Don't know if that's the case with your bike, but it's probably something similiar.

I think I have ruled-out the PV being the issue. Opened up the side access on the cylinder and it appears to be fully closed.

Sending the Head and Carb to RB
 
Im not sure if your bike has it or not but some of them have a dual map CDI box. If yours does and its set for (Rain) mode it wont rev as fast.

I do have a MAP switch. This problem is much more profound than the small difference between rain/sun

You'll love the results with the RB mods. My guess is it'll wake up your 200. Not sure if they still make a Messico pipe for that bike, but I bet that'd be a good addition as well.
