2018 XC300.. more power?

Hey guys,

I recently moved and went from riding at Sea level - 1000 ft to now riding at 4500-7000 feet.

I have the jetting worked out for the most part, I've played with the powervalve to have the motor come on hard in the bottom and mid.

When I was out riding today, I struggled a few times where I was lugging in second and the bike just didn't have that "300" jam i'm used too. I can't comfortably pull a gear higher when I ride now and i'd like to fix that.

I'm running stock gearing, I did order a 50t for the back, but I don't think that will be enough.

I'm not interested in any carb solutions, none of the fancy carbs out there have a good enough reputation to interest me.

I've reached out to RK-Tek in regards to a complete billet head, this sounds like the best bang for my buck but I just wanted to see what everyone else thinks and if they have had success with anything else.

All thoughts and comments appreciated.

You're on the right path.

You can run a higher compression head at altitude. Couple that up with some jetting changes and you'll be back luggin again.

I am super happy with the RK Tek head. It was everything claimed, in my experience - ride a gear higher/lug better, runs cleaner, better mileage, more power everywhere.

I just had my stock head milled; if you might go back to 1,000' riding someday, you might want the "Cheater Head". It's the stock head milled to take different dome inserts, so you could easily dial in the right compression for your main riding elevation.

Give Kels a call at RK Tek. He had a Gasgas and tried several mods on it, I'm guessing he can help you get what you're after!

There is no replacement for displacement! ;-)
A big bore kit will fill in the lost power and you adjust the squish at the same time.
