Alloy subframe installation

I just got my alloy replacement subframe to substitute for my 2012 plastic one that broke. Mark at Gofasters set me up. Includes a new seat and everything. I was wondering if anyone here has already done this upgrade and if there's any advice you may have for somebody about to dive into it?

Use the Search function and you will find where GMP provided pics and discussion about the upgrade.

Just finished mine yesterday. It is pretty straight forward. Just need a few pieces of hardware/bolts. I should have made a list of what was needed, but I was at work and fitting this in between running calls. You will need two new mounting bolts for the subframe mounts near the top of the shock. Also a few M5 bolts as well. The strap that has the GG logo will fit on top of the airbox. I managed to keep my old side panels. I cut off the lower piece that slides into the old side spars and drilled a hole to bolt to the new spars.

Just take your time and it will come together.

The metal strap w/ the GG logo. Is for the 13'w/ plastic sub. Desert Gasser, did you need to drill the metal bracket to fit on the seat base?

Top mounts are m8x1.25x50. Smaller screws are m5x0.8x15 iirc.

This is what I figured it went. It didn't fit anywhere else and the pics I did find of it looked to be the right application. Couldn't figure why they would include a piece that goes with the plastic sub-frame with the alloy kit?

This part is an interesting one.

I looked at the 2013 Parts diagram for the Factory Replica. The only place I could find this piece was here (see photo below). It bolts to the under side of the seat base and then when the seat is installed it catches the hook you see in your photo.
Does that make sense to you and others?
Obviously this would be for the kick start models only as I think the E-start ones have the battery installed to the under side of the seat base (this is my guess only as I have not seen exactly how the battery is installed on the 2013's)

The interesting think is that the holes do line up perfect for the airbox but I do not see this piece on the parts diagram for the airbox....

On my 13 it's bolted to the front of the airbox it holds it together/ sturdies it up. And your wiring goes underneath.

That makes sense as well.
So does then what under your seat bottom hooks on to that hook right behind the gas tank?

It would make more sense if the holes lined up with any of them on the underside of the seat? Maybe something is missing in the kit? I bet the battery box under the seat caught the alloy piece on the subframe to use as a mid seat catch.

Thisi kit would rock if it included all of the required fasteners and even a hint of an instruction page ;)

I drilled the strap shown and bolted it to the underside of the seat. Then I clearanced the plastic straking on the seat base and this allowed the hook on the subframe to engage the seat.

NICE - I did exactly the same!!!

Do you think the strap is supposed to be curved? I could see bending it out, flattening the ends where the holes are, then the bolt holes could line up. Also would give the hook more to catch on to.

One quick question for you Bandit---Do you have the new AL subframe installed?

I wouldn't recommend doing that. The new holes are easy to drill out. Plus then the bar would be too far from the hook and it would not serve a purpose.

Trust me - prior to installing the bar under mine the seat moved around just a bit. Now after putting the bar underneath, the seat does not move at all.

Not installed yet. I'm preparing to do it after Thanksgiving.

My current stock 12 seat moves around a bit under me too.

My thinking was why would the holes be pre drilled in the wrong place? Maybe they aren't and something else wasn't done, like bend the strap.

Just brain storming a head scratcher. Isn't that required to own a Gasser?:D

The strap or bar being discussed wasn't originally intended for a seat catch. But most guys are re-drilling it for that purpose. But what it does fit perfect for is to go on top of the air box and mount to the two tabs on the AL sub frame. And your wiring fits under it on the right side of the box in the small divot. I don't see a need for it to be a catch, but only because I rarely sit down when I ride.

Hi Folks

My kit showed up this week and are reading up here as much as I can before going at it. I have a 12 EC 300 and note on another thread that I should also buy a 13 gas tank for the seat to fit properly. Is this correct, I note there is no mention of it on this thread and want to have everything in order before starting.

Thanks!
