Canadian newb

It will smooth out with break in. What you should do is gear the bike a bit lower so you can avoid having to make that downshift to first, and use 2nd for the tight corners.

I ride SCF all the time, there is nothing there that you should be in first for. Little slip of the clutch around some of the tight stuff and off you go. My wife rides the same bike and uses 3rd and 2nd only and has a 50 tooth on the rear.

Mine is a 48 right now, there was only 1 real tight technical track we found that I needed to drop to first. Every other track I was in 2nd and 3rd.

I think a 50 is perfect. Can ride the tight stuff and still cruise at 80km per hour on the road.

Yep! 13/50 works well for me. First gear is there for anything crazy technical. Second will pull clean from a stand still and a little clutch will really have it screaming from corner to corner. You can cruise at 80km/h comfortably, and still take the bike up over 120km/h if you ever feel the need.

It depends on personal preference, how your particular bike pulls off the bottom, and terrain, but anywhere from 13/50 to 13/52 is good. In the mountains and rocks I like 13/52 best, as first is then a bailout gear should I blow a steep climb or obstacle attempt. Flat terrain 13/51 is good and still keeps the bike out of first. Here where its flat its also sandy so I stick with the 51.

Like GMP stated, it's personal preference. But honestly I'm really amazed why people are gearing to a 50??? I'm running the 48 and it really works good for me. In the hills/technical rocky trails of southern Ohio I never really saw the need to change to the 50. I would think going to the 50 would pretty much eliminate the need for 1st gear all together and why limit yourself back to 5 gears? Also, I haven't really ridden the bike in muddy conditions (been a drought year) but when I do I feel the 48 would allow me to lug the bike a little easier. Like you've all experienced, the bike is a tractor! Good luck and happy trails.

Personal pref is right. I found where I ride in SW Alberta where there is some big long hill climbs, with stock 13/48 gearing my bike would fall flat fast even in 1st gear. I now have 12/48 and it is a lot better but for the way I ride I am probably going to try a 13/52 or 12/50. With 12/48 on a lot of hill climbs I find 2nd is too high and have to kick down to 1st which sometimes is to low. I can count on one hand the amount I have used 5 and 6, only on roads and I don't need to go any faster than 100 which I rarely do anyways.

i really like the 13/48 gearing on my 300. i can ride everything from slow crawling single track with gnarly climbs to faster stuff as well. i wouldnt change it for fear of messing with a good thing!

I wander the difference has to do with the crank stuffers that your 10 has and my 11 doesn't? With stock gearing, mine felt like a real dog on steeper hill climbs. Even in 1st.

i was wondering the same thing, next week if were out will swap when we can climb a few big hills. id like to see the difference as well

I've left the stock 13-48 on my 12 and it seems fine for me in most places I ride, although at Chicopee it was a bit too high(it was tight on that course! 1st gear in a bunch of places.....).
I'm usually in 3rd & sometimes 2nd on most single track. Have considered going the 13-50 route but haven't made the switch yet.....

I think M357.5 is still building up skills and hasn't really been on a bike much in a couple years, so I can understand why he'd use 1st in a few places in the SC forest....

13/48 on a 300 is a lot different than the same on a 250. Around here in the mountains and tight stuff, 13/50 on a 300 is good.

Mm I rode my 13/48 until the rear sprocket was proper trashed. I had no issues with it 'working'. My feeling was just that 13/50 allows you to shift to the next gear a bit earlier while still allowing the bike to remain in the meat of the power. This was most noticable when climbing, and generally between 2nd/3rd or 3rd/4th. Nothing worse than trying to ride your bike on the pipe and having it fall off song because you knocked it up a gear a touch too early!

If you are happy riding around between 1/4 and 1/2 throttle a gear high than the 13/48 combo should do fine and it will be mighty tame. A little clutch here and there will keep it moving in the right direction.

As stated.. All personal preference. Anyone ever tried the 40 (i think?) tooth sprocket that came in the spares kit?

Spot on lol, been a few years. If Wattsy has his Dirtwise school here in the spring I'm TAKING IT.

Think I'll do the ODSC training day, and if Wattsy comes again I'll do that too.

Friday I'm off to the local Motocross track. They have 3 tracks, the main MX track is HUGE with lots of BIG jumps, elevation changes and varying terrain from hardpack to sand. Then they have the old GP track with elevation and terrain changes, no big jumps but lots of big fast open sweepers and a few sections with potato sized rocks to deal with on a large uphill etc. Then they have the Mini track, and a very large wooded area with single/double track to play on as well.

So I hope to have a bit of a ride report for you guys on how myself and the Gas Gas get along on all the different areas/terrain.

Taking the day off work, for a personal day, nothin better than riding while your supose to be working :D the snow is going to be flying here soon so taking advantage of the decent weather while I can.
