Clutch growl

Out on the 300 r on the weekend 2011 and going through some heavy stuff the clutch makes a squeal / growl when I pull off in say second , any one know or have this ?

It is a known issue, some change oil and it cures it. For sure a Rekluse basket or any other after market basket will solve it. You can do a search on here as some have cross drilled the stock basket with good results. I went the Rekluse route myself.

Happened to me on a 250 and 300 both 2011s need to drill more holes in ceter hub on your clutch there are pics on this site somewhere that is how I did it and it works

I have this as well. If I lay off the clutch for a few seconds it goes away. Is there an actual mechanical problem? Is it something that will cause a failure or just an annoying noise?

If I remember it is a combination of lube flow & clutch slip/chatter. In extreme cases (where no regard for the clutch was given) I know of a 2010 that actually burnt the clutch up, he was an A level guy and was riding a 'shop' bike so he didn't really care what happened. My '10 was growling on occasion and I didn't see any damage when I went to the Rekluse setup, but I don't abuse the clutch either

Clutch growl/squeal under heavy load, high clutch slip is common on GasGas. The 2 low cost fixes to reduce the growl/squeal are...

Use Shell Rotella 15W-40 oil. This is one of the best oils to reduce growl/squeal, but it doesn't eliminate it.

Drill more holes in the clutch hub. Again, this reduces growl/squeal, but it doesn't eliminate it.

My 2011 made some noise from new, I added a recluse Core 2 and it was much worse...sounded like it was going to fly apart when worked hard. Installed the recluse basket and nice and quiet.
Note the 2011 had two different hub internal sizes (recluse will have you measure when you order). Mine was the larger size and seems that is the more common one to be loud. Unless you are on a very tight budget, just install the recluse basket and be gone of the noise.

It is hard to tell for sure if the growl/squeal causes harm. I try avoid the conditions that cause the growl/squeal. Even so, it makes noise at times.

My '01 XC300 has a Rekluse with the original clutch basket and plates. Still going strong at 557 hours.

My '06 EC300 has a Rekluse. It had a friction plate failure at 344 hours breaking into multiple pieces. The surprising part was the motorcycle was completely rideable. The aluminum bits in the oil gave me the clue something went wrong. I put new plates in and it is still going strong with 432 total hours.

Just to pose this question again, does anyone know if it actually causes harm?

as I said above....It can- I know of a 2010 that actually burnt the clutch up, he was an A level guy and was riding a 'shop' bike so he didn't really care what happened.

Both my bikes have had it to varying degrees.

Find a fluid that reduces it (works for you), and ride it. I have over 300hrs on my 2010 stock clutch and at 260hrs everything still measured in spec with only some light notching on the basket, which is expected anyway.

It wont make noise for long! My 12 had some huge holes drilled in the basket, 13 did not have these but I installed the Rekluse basket as soon as I got it. I also run Redline gear oil with good results.

Elf HTX 740 is a very good oil for this. It even says on the bottle "not for wet clutches" but montesa recommend it in their 4rt wet clutches.

The noise is normal but put in a Rekluse basket, which I did with an auto clutch, and the noise is gone. If you are running the stock basket, put your GG in neutral and let it idle, you will hear a rattle/hum, now just pull in your clutch lever(don't put the bike in gear) and the rattle/hum will immediately stop.

The only time my auto clutch makes any noise is when I am two gears too high in a stick field but as soon as I downshift it is quiet again. I am very happy with the Rekluse basket.

Ok went to my local gas gas dealer and he's given me a new oil that the factory is starting to use , gro global racing oil Gear extreme 75 w fully synthetic going to give this a try , anyone used it .?

I use Amsoil 0w-40. By far the best thing I have used yet.
