clutch squeel

I just use an old oil bottle with the extend a tube in the lid. The tube is approx the same size as the hole so I lean the bike a little and locate the tube on the hole and squeeze the oil in gently.
Very easy and no mess if you are patient.
Cheers Mark

Clutch Squeal

Well guys Ihave been working on this issue in the basement. I have milled out the additional webbing in the stock OEM basket and I have purchased a new basket from Barnett but just to let everyone on here know this is not exclusive to Gas Gas, there is a thread going around about the same noise on KTM's however they have went about reducing the noise by a different means. Isntead of modifying the outer clutch basket they are working on the inner basket by drilling 5/16 holes in in the base neart the post where the clutch spring bolt would thread into the inner basket and then drilling 3/16 holes in the pressure plate. All this venting has allowed the oil to flow more freely from the inner basket toward the outer basket. According to them it has worked great.

I will keep everyone posted after I complete my modifications and post the results.

All that drilling is scary. I saw a Yamaha 250F motor that went boom from a clutch mod. I would think that parts like that are heat treated at the factory post machining to releive stress, but who knows? How much was the Barnett basket?

The Barnett basket is $249.00. Both the inner and outer basket are cast aluminum therefore I don't believe there is a process for hardening the aluminum. The problem with any casting (aluminum or steel) there is imperfections below the surface not visible by the naked eye in the form of perosity. When we drill or maching these surfaces we could incidently get into one of these area's that weakens the baskets. Some of the inperfections can be identified by magniflux but again that is a piece of eguipment most don't have the availability to use. Thats why I went ahead and purchased the billet machined Barnett, just a little more insurance

Yeah the Barnett has stainless steel inserts over the the billet aluminum fingers. If I were better at posting pics I would let everyone see

Here's a picture of one in my 450 Honda:

Hope you post pics of your steps thru install...this is one worth documenting!

Here are a series of comparison photos of the new Barnett clutch basket.

The Barnett basket is in the center. Version 2 of the GG basket is on the left and version 1 of the GG is on the right.

On the last photo the large retainer washer (that is held in place by 8 rivots) has been removed from the left basket.

The Barnett basket uses tapered machine screws (instead of rivots) and its own "large retainer washer," which are provided. Your old clutch basket has to provide the primary ring gears and rubber grummets.

We've been working on this product with Barnett for over a year now, as well as newly designed aftermarket Barnett steel and fiber clutch plates, and are targeting an eventual price to be the same as the mass prodcued KTM, Yamaha, Honda etc. ones.

More information to follow in a couple of days as we are waiting for that information from Barnett.

I went with 10 tungsten carbide balls on my Rekluse clutches ('01 GasGas 300, '06 Gas Gas 300 & also my sons KX65) to get a firmer engage at low speed. It markedly reduces the low speed clutch slip for trail riding and works even better for trail riding. It still works very well, slipping when necessary.

The only time I get some GasGas clutch squeal with the Rekluse is corner case - clutch is hot, steep hill, too high of a gear and twisting hard on throttle. I find that if I manualy override the Rekluse clutch with the lever a bit it quiets down. I suspect it may be that it allows some more oil between the cltuch plates.

Mark, does the Barnett basket have the rubber damper blocks?

That information is coming. The clutch basket we received was already put together.

We provided them with a complete "inner" and "outer" basket and clutch pack to copy and this is what the came up with. It should be similair to their other baskets kits.

Is the center basket not missing the drive gear for the powervalve/ water pump.

The outer baskets are from GG 4-strokes, both the 2-stroke and the 4-stroke use the same basket less gears, and that extra gear helps drive the FSE/FSR oil pump I'm told.

So, looking at the Barnett and the updated basket there doesn't seem to be a big difference in the two in regards to oil porting.
I need to check my basket to see which one I have, because if I have the updated GG one then I would assume that changing to the Barnett wouldn't cure the problem.

Squawk or not, the SS finger inserts would make it a near forever part though. I really need one for my Ducati.

My Barnett clutch basket come in today, oh the pictures just doesnt do it justice. Off the subject some what but I busted the the right radiator shroud on my 2010 six days so I ordered the red radiator shrouds from GoFasters and the Portugal Six Days sticker kit that came on my bike. I think it looks great with the red shroud and my sticker on the side.

I will keep everyone up to date on the change over and let you know if this cures the squeal. Only bad news is the weather is calling for snow this weekend just depends on how much we receive before I know if we can ride:(

I add an upper mount to the shrouds and mount them to my rad guards with a rubber isolator like that used on the pipe. Much more tear off resistant and the isolator prevents cracking.

Snow? In TN its gone in a day or so anyway, right? I've been to Knoxville on business, in fact I may have to go this summer. If so I'm thinking of driving from NJ with my bike in the truck, and avoiding the nude pics and fondling at the airport.
