Just picked up a used 2001 xc200(my first 2stroke). I've been going through the bike to make it ready for the trail. I'm having trouble with the hydraulic clutch. I cant seem to push the bike around in gear while holding the clutch lever. Is this normal? I just put a new clutch in, minus basket and plate. I also took apart the master cylinder. The o rings looked good. I have also back bled the hydraulic system as well. The bike starts good while in neutral and shifts smooth from neutral to first(with no lurching). Any more avenues to explore would be appreciated.

Even when hot it can still be a bit grabby and not want to be pushed. Both my bikes have no problem starting in gear, but dont like being pushed in gear. Unless you take all the free play out of the clutch, which is NOT recommended, it might never want to be pushed in gear. Sorry.

I'm using dot 4 hydraulic and amsoil 10-40 gear oil. I just measured my clutch springs and they were about 1.5mm out of spec(too short). have new ones on order, hopefully that's my problem.

If the springs are short, new springs will make the problem worse. You're not going to be able to push it around with new springs, either.

IF the clutch doesn't slip and you can shift fine and start the bike in gear, then I wonder if you don't have another issue like a dragging brake. Have you put it on a lift and spun both wheels?

My daughters used to push their bikes out of trouble. I always told them that they had an engine to do that, and that if they wanted to push, they should ride a mountain bike. Now that they can kick my a$$, i realize i should have kept my mouth shut.

if you've bled your slave, and you have the master adjuster bolt with a gap (must not preload the cylinder). could be worn basket or hub - check for grooves. also, experimenting with trans fluids made a difference for me. i ran 0w-40 amsoil and that helped. i'm currently running atf......

How are you finding the ATF- Smooth shifting? less drag?

both. plus cheap. i'm changing fluid every 2 hours anyways. you can't run it if you don't change it often though. i've run atf+f and the 'multi vehicle' stuff. have not run dexron (although i think multi-vehicle is probably the same thing) or +4... i've found no real drawbacks. plus it's usually red, so it's easy to see how clean it comes out...

on a side note, i've found the fastest way to fill the trans. i use the lid and tube from a bottle of slime (actually quad boss brand dirt bike sealant), lid screws right on the walmart(i did say cheap right?) atf bottle, i can fill trans in about 15 seconds..
