Roger that! Much more likely for a ring to jag an edge on the exhaust port itself than the bleed hole for the comp. But totally your choice to block it. Won't change much other than making it harder to push past TDC.
Its a bit more common on bridged exhaust ports where you wear a small section of the ring more heavily than the ports both side and the buldging can cause a hang up. I don't know if I recall any particular issues with this occurring on an EC (which doesn't mean it hasn't).
How old in the cylinder? is it possible the coating simply wore too thin?
