Hey folks.
I just put a TrailTech Vapor on my '09 EC300 and I'm wondering if you guys (and gals) would like a DIY article on how to do it.
I took a ton of pics during the install, but I figured I'd ask before I got to work on it.

I'm not sure if there's a forum rule about DIY stuff (I didn't see anything in the site rules), but I figured this would be a good check with the Admin and Mods.

"Who the hell are you to write anything technical?!!?"
If you'd like to check out some of the other DIY articles I've done, here's a link:
http://www.srtconnection.com/forums/forumdisplay.php?f=22
Almost all of them in there are mine.
Everything from simple stuff to more complicated modifications and procedures (no engine rebuilds yet...heh heh).

If it's something you'd like, let me know and I'll get it together this weekend as I'm not able to get any riding in (work interferes with so much of my ride time....).
Thanks everyone!

Kevan,

I would be great if you did the technical report. I have done several for our site as well. There are no rules about who can contribute them. Everyone is welcome to supply them. Thanks for taking the time to photo and write up a short article on it.

I'm about to put this whole thing together and get it up on the forum this PM, but I need to know a few things first:
- Text/word limits per post?
- Picture link limits per post?

If the Admin or Moderators could let me know on those, it would save me a bunch of time.

Thanks!

The forum isn't the place to put articles - we put them on the main website - so put something together in microsoft word and send it to me and I'll add it to the website. E-mail it to webmaster@gasgasrider.org

Thanks,
jeff

Thanks Jeff, but I roll Mac so....no MS Word. :-)

I found out that it's limited to 10,000 characters and only 4 pictures per post.
I have over 12,000 characters and more than 70 pictures.

I also prefer to retain my copyright with this stuff and the ability to edit stuff (for when some clown on another forum steals it), so I'll figure out a different method.

If images are linked from Photobucket, TinyPic, et.al. there shouldn't be any bandwidth problems here (vs. me sending you a file with 70+ pics).
Just a thought.

Posting a large tech article on a discussion is like pounding a square peg into a round hole...

Send me pdf and I'll put it on the main website and you can add a reference to it here - basically we'll host it for you here - when you edit it just send me an updated copy.

I also had a wiki page set up for this website "gasgas wiki" were you could enter your own articles, etc. But after all the time I just spent upgrading hardware and software - I need to take a break and go for a ride...

I'm not sure I follow your "square peg; round hole" line, Jeff.

With the dozens of other articles I've posted on forums, there has only been one problem (the site decided to charge members for the DIY area....which was solely my articles. My stuff is for everyone and I bailed on that place, but only after replacing the picture links with close-ups of well-endowed African American male genitalia post-coitus).

Forums are the perfect place for DIY articles as other members can interact with the person who wrote them, and those too shy to post can gain information as well.
Other, more knowledgeable members, can also provide insight, correct errors, and post their own tips.

Please understand my confusion. I'm a member of over 3 dozen forums, admin on 2, and this is the only one where posting a DIY isn't recommended.

I'll still do the PDF if you want it, but it won't be available to members until later this week (it's much more time-consuming regarding building and formatting).

This site is not for profit and member owned - it belongs to the entire community and I volunteer my time to maintain it - there is no charge for any features on the site and there never will be.

So let's say you write up a big article with 70 photos - then someone will want to sticky it to the top of the forum - then someone will add a correction on page 20 of the discussion that follows. Then 3 years later - you get dis-interested and your flickr account goes away - so nice article in a discussion forum with no photos - just a bunch of square boxes with "photo can't be found" images in them.

This is why I don't like large reference material to go in the discussion forum -it's really not suited for it relative to other methods of displaying, editing and storing the information - that's why wiki's exist and thrive as content management systems for reference material. (hence my square peg and round hole reference).

We have the bones of a wiki page set up "gasgas wiki" for this website - this is the ideal place to put it - but given that I just spent the last couple of weeks upgrading hardware and software for this site, the best I can do is add it to the main website where the other tech articles are stored. In the past, users have sent me the info and I have put in the time to format it on the main website, etc.

Jeff

I've heard the same "for members; by members; never a charge" line before. Forgive my hesitancy.

As you can see from my other DIY's that are 4-5 years old, I maintain my photo hosting.
Though I bet the guys on that forum that decided to charge members wished I wouldn't. :)

CMS stuff is nice, for things that are being updated on a continuous basis (like stock quotes and newspaper articles). It really has no advantage when it comes to reference material.
Also, with the ability for any member to go in and edit as desired....not thrilling to the author (esp. of something technical).
Oh, and with any wiki-type setup, copyright is toast.

BTW- on threads where photos 'red X', we would email the account owner and ask them for the original photos and host them on a free off-site server (like PB or Flikr).
If they didn't reply quickly, then we'd either lock or delete the thread.

I'll work on a PDF for the site.

Hi Kevan,
This site is community owned - it is owned by you - within reason, you can do anything you want - even if I don't like it...

As far as your copyright goes - forget it - if you contribute something here - you give it to the community.

I have just spent many late nights upgrading this site - my patience is a little thin to fence about what is the right way to do something. I have a number of things left on my to-do list - banner ads running and photo gallery integration back up and running, etc. This site is pretty clean in it's layout (mainly thanks to Matt's guidance) - I'd prefer to keep it that way....

I have a PDF of the DIY article ready.
Email me- (kevan [at] jemfest [dot] com) if you'd like a copy of it.

Thanks.

Jeff, I agree with you all the way.We are all indebted to you and the amount of work you do for us here. I love this site - not only the look, layout and the way it is "managed", but the friendliness and acceptance of anyones views, questions or answers.
I don't think Kevan has any right to force his seemingly vital articles on us in the way he is trying to do. We don't need Kevan "contributor to over 3 dozen forums" and his 70 photos. We have REAL guys like Glen(GMP), with REAL knowledge based on years of REAL rebuilds etc. who are happy to contribute with kindness and patience.

Just don't offer a better way to do something which would save the site time and money and garner more members, right?

I appreciate the welcome.

Hi All,
Please be respectful of everyone at all times on this forum.

I would also ask that all keep the drama to a minimum.

thx,
jeff
