EC200 died on straight gas with no premix oil.

I am considering buying a 2004 EC200 that was run on straight gas with no oil premix. The owner replaced the piston and said the cylinder was ok but the crank bottom end is making noise.

I am thinking that I should be able to fix it with new crank bearings and rod kit. I estimate about $425 for the parts and gasket kit. Does this seem like a reasonable assumption? Anything else I should watch for?

I budgeted about $1000 for complete rebuild of a ktm 200 including replating the cylinder and cutting the head. So your estimate sounds about right.

Don't trust what you were told, only trust what you can prove. Pull the head and cylinder, if possible, before buying. A complete rebuild, top to bottom, was $800 in parts for me. That is every moving part and gasket, including piston and rod kit. Yes you can rebuild just the crank for less than $500, but don't be surprised if you have to spend another $300 on a replate of the cylinder.

Not trying to be overly dramatic, just be prepared for any eventuality. If the bike is cheap enough, $1000 in a complete rebuild is a worthy investment (if done right the first time).

Thanks for the suggestinos. Trust but verify, sounds like the way to go. It may be a challenge to get the seller to let me open his engine. I may be able to borrow one of those video bore scopes and check through the exhaust port to get a better idea of the cylinder condition.

Are there any known issues with the 2004 EC200s that I should watch for?

Thank you

At least pop off the exhaust and check the piston for visible signs of scoring. If possible, pop off the reeds, too, and check there. If there is any damage, it should show through the ports. If the intake and exhaust side (especially exhaust, it's the hottest) then it should be close enough to run as-is.

parts

ive got a 200 crank & rod assy. and piston if you need, if interested lmk
Stoby

Pull the head, easy way to check the jug.... cycle through a stroke.....Heck, if the bike is cheap...you gotta split the cases any way....I see a full rebuild in your future:D Then you know she's solid!

All good info. I will check it out tomorrow and if I can get it for reasonable $ I will add one more to the corral. More to come!

"Less than $1k" before or after parts?

So I can work backwords, what is a fair price for a clean complete 2004 EC200 that is in running condition?

Sorry, I meant the purchase price of this bike needing a new bottom end needs to be under $1k
Bike is worth 1200-2000 in running condition IMO

i would agree on that.. in my area anyway..

i had been looking for a 200.. found a 2003 200 exc (sorry) in really nice shape for 1500. that little 200 is a neat scoot..

it would sure be nice to pull the jug and head ..

Thank you all for the great info. I am going to check it out later today and see if it is a good deal.

Gasser - If we were not 600 miles apart I would be more interested.

If I could find a running 200 within 600 miles for $900 I would drive to get it. At 12 MPG that is 50 gallons, which is $200 in gas, but that is still pretty cheap.

Well we picked up the local bike for my son. While the crank needs a rebuild the bike is very clean and has a clear title. It came with a nice box of spare and new parts (including ones I needed for my bike). The bike is well outfitted with new plastic, big tank, pipe and disc guards as well as aftermarket pegs. It makes very good compression and the cylinder looked ok, through the exhaust port, but I need to pull it to see for sure. I got the bike for well under $1k.

Now the fun starts! We just finished dinner and we are going to start to pull the engine. :)

You'll be done before the ice cream dessert melts. Save room for cold bevs after.

So Far So Good. The cylinder looks pretty good with no significant issues. The connecting rod big end is JUNK! I have never seen one with 1/8 inch of play before. We will split the cases tomorrow!

I'll be coming through Louisville and St Louis about a month from now on my way to Colorado.
