EX vs. HARD

What I don't understand is why do you guys ride a sand and mud tyre on rocky terrain. The funny thing is that my buddy's in Germany do the same. I knot that the S12 is a great tyre but not in hard terrain there are better tyres on the market.

I do it because I'm looking for the best all terrain setup. Especially up front where tire performance is so critical
A soft terrain tire works better in rocks than a hard terrain tire works in sand or mud. The former is more than acceptable, the latter is always a disaster.

Think Moab: brutal rocks, deep soft sand, snot slick clay.

For this I would always use a FIM enduro tyre at front, same profil like a sand and mud tyre but a compound Wichita works on rocks as well.

So is that just common wear on mine? Or is it due to the terrain I ride?

I rode with my EXs yesterday. I really like them, I run Tubliss in both. Its all sand and tree roots here in Florida. I have about 200 miles on this set of EXs and they still look very good. My set does not have any wear like your tires in the photos.

When I lived in Northeast Tennessee I started using Metzeler MC4s which chunked off exactly like your tires bc there were a lot of rocks. I immediately switched to the intermediate Metzeler MC5s and there wasn't anymore chunking off and wear like your tires in the photos.

I don't know the availability of Pirelli in the US, but these MX tires are much better than the metzeler, even when the are produced in the same factory.

Kind of tangenting a bit here.

Ive tried all of the above tires, and thought that the Pirelli Mid Soft front was the best of that lot. Didn't have much time for any of their rears though. The MidSoft Pirelli is very similar to the Six Days Soft Metzeler front tire.

Currently running a M403 Bridgestone on the front, and I think its a phenomenal tire, works well in mud and slick stuff, doesn't chunk in rocks, works in sand. That's paired with a Michelin S12XC on the back, a 130 wide one, has bigger knobs, doesn't chunk, seems to grip well even after rounding off.

My favorite choice for the rear. Been using it for years . Tried different options but find myself coming back to the MC4's

yep, they work down to bald in the 'great slower downer rer' of all bike riding. - red clay. there are better specific tyres but it will do it all. mx51 dunlop if there is no clay is great as it has a stiffer side wall and is less wallowy when howling out powerslides :)

Try out the 216 extrem or how it's called. It is a FIM tire with trial compound. Very soft and very good on rocks bud worn out quickly.

That be the one! Everything out my way wears out quickly, besides a trials tire.....and those look a bit queer on my bike. Although they work well, I just prefer using a knobby so I can take corners at a bit of speed. Im using the Dunlop at81rc right now and I have to run it damn near flat to get it to hook up. It is wearing nicely and only mild chunking after 12 hours.

Hmmm, been thinking of trying Bridgestones myself lately.
MS32 fronts are very good, just don't like how the side knobs tear off so soon :-\

from what i have heard,
the thing that makes a tire good in sand, etc makes it bad on hard pack.
the sand tire is less compliant and stabs thru the sand.
but when that same compound hits hard terrain it will rip sice its not flexible.
need a tire wih AI that reads the terrain and adjust to compound instantly. might as well have it regulate its own air pressure..

i have wondered how cool it would be to have d3o in the sidewalls.
run super low psi but never rim it.....cool
