exhaust differences between 200 and 250/300?

hi guys,

i just got an ec 200 2001 with a messico pipe on it.
i think it rides fantastic but a friend of mine noticed that down low in the revs it made an noise as if it were running lean "bwaaaa" (hollow noise in the airbox sorta) and then came on the pipe strong.
then we started thinking, that she could be running somewhat lean, but then i allso read on some review that the wrong pipe was fitted and got the same effect, and after swapping for the correct exhaust, it was super!
how can you see the difference between an ec 200 and an ec 300 exhaust?
i have an ec 300 allso and at first glance, there seems no difference...(allso messico pipe)
you would think that an ec 200 pipe would be a litlle shorter then the ec 300 right? (=less volume)

thanks for any input.

ps: i don't think it's carb related and engine sounds like new.

I would check the power valve actuator on the right side of the cylinder.
Sounds like the power valve flapper is loose.

I believe the 250 and the 300 use the same pipe and that the 200 has a different one, however looking at the Parts catalogue it doesn't specify that they're different. 125 is definately different, 250/300 are definately the same.

It could be the PV is chattering a bit, or it could indeed be that the jetting is a bit lean on the needle. When I went from the 300 top end to the 250 top end I noticed this as well. The smaller capacity required some extra fuel. Half a clip too lean and it feels flat on the bottom and doesn't come into the meat of the power as easily. When it does though it hits hard and rips. Going half a clip richer helps out in the torque department big time.

I have a 2001 200 with a 250 cylinder on it. The pipe may not have been stock, but I didnt change it with the new head. Hope this helps.

I instaled a 250cc cylyinder, piston, and head. I kept the the rod from the 200, so it's sort of a 225. I've heard of people swapping the rod to get the full 250 cc's. I posted under my user ID on it in the past. It has the parts list with it. It sure kicks! It feels way stronger than my KDX 220 thats for sure!. Everything fit together perfetct. There were no issues in with assembly.

Going off topic a bit, well a lot really.
The 200 has a shorter stroke than the bigger bikes, but the same length rod as the 250 and 300. The difference is in the crank. So you must have a shortened 250 cylinder for the 200 crank to stroke enough to get an acceptable squish, seems like quite a hybrid to me. Neat idea.

Now that requires a bit more info. I bought it like this. The receipt with it from several years back.... 2004 I think, showed a GG dealer in WI did the work. They did put a new cylinder head on it. It had a bunch of gaskets between the case and head, like 4. It was ugly. I toasted a lower con rod brg last season so I rebuilt it this winter. I got in over my head when I split the cases and had to take it to Hall's to finish up. They built the crank and set it back up with only on gasket. They got perfect squish. The guys there loved the set up. I still have the original 200 jug and head in a box. They are in great shape, no idea why the previous owner spent that kind of cash (oh wait... same reason I did!), but I love the bike. I restored it top to bottom this winter, and just ran into a mess with the final touch... going off topic again; see my post today under suspension. I bought a brand new wheel set of e-bay and I am really pissed with what I got in the mail today. The spoke holes have been reamed or drilled out to accept larger spokes and they tore up the hubs. I can’t figure this one out. If its OEM GG work it is POOR WORKMANSHIP, if its not then its and idiot with a drill gone mad, and in my opinion ruined a brand new wheel set. Take a look at the post. I hope I am over reacting... but I sure don’t like the look of it!

Sorry for getting so far off!

so i'll check needle height and powervalve, but then i still don't know if it really needs another pipe.
i do know for sure that the 250 and 300 share the same pipe indeed and that the 125 is completely different.
hope someone can solve this issue for me
thanks guys.
Hannes.

i just noticed that the expansionchamber from the 200 does not touch the radiator and on the 300 it does, so i suppose the diameter must be somewhat smaller then on the 300.
