FMF Stealth silencer update!!

No I think the Stealth cans are bigger volume and maybe a bit longer = more packing. That's one reason they're quieter. I don't know if they changed the plumbing in there. Haven't seen one yet.

swap the internals of an older Turbine core II

What would you gain doing that? Might as well keep the TC II

I wonder if the cans were the same dimensions and could swap the internals of an older Turbine core II
Can on the Stealth is definitely larger in diameter. Almost looks like they took a 4 stroke can and welded a 2 stroke stinger on it. Ran my bike through the tech at the race and blew an 83. Only bike quieter was a KDX with the stock silencer. Next time mine and my buddies bikes are together again I will try and get some pictures, maybe pull them off and see how far off the stingers are.

Got my "Q" in today.
Here's some shots I took.

Even if that did mount on the older bikes, it wouldn't clear my tire. The TC2 gets hit by the tire and the Q would get demolished by it. I wish it did fit because my bike blows 94-96db.

I have one coming tomorrow and unless it's a TOTAL PIA it's going to fit one way or another on my '05 MC.

May have to add or move tabs on the subframe or move the tabs on the can. Tire clearance should be easy enough to deal with, but we'll see I guess.

I'll post up some pics successful or not...

O.K. here are some pics of how the FMF Q Stealth hangs off the standard subframe on the pre '07 bikes. These pics were taken on my '05 MC 250.

Here it is hung off in stock mounting position. The front tab on the subframe is out too far. Causes misalignment side to side. The can must sit at a lower angle on the '07+ bikes because the inlet tube is at the wrong angle to marry up to the stinger on the pipe. The swaged end on the inlet to the silencer is also very slight bit too small. It won't slide over the stinger. The newer pipes must have a slightly smaller stinger. Maybe an excuse to get one of those new stlye Gnarlys. Still would have to rework the angle on the inlet though I guess.

Here is shot from the rear showing side to side misalignment with can in "stock" position.

Here I zip tied it to the back side of the tab on the front hanger. That fixes the side to side misalignment. The larger dogleg on the inlet pipe allows for adequate tire clearance. I have a 120/100/18 on there and it clears fine.

It does not look like too much of a big deal to move that front tab a bit or you could even just bolt the hanger to the back side of the tab on the subframe like I had it zip tied. Then it's just a matter of strategically cutting that inlet pipe to realign it.

My plan is to replace the swaged end on the inlet pipe with a chunk cut from an older style silencer since the angle has to be changed anyway. I don't think it will be much of a deal.

I am sure there will be a bit of grinding to do on the number plate as well, but I can't figure that until I get the silencer on there.

rpduc.
I don't know if that sub frame will handle the extra weight/ mass of the Q silencer.

Thank you guys for the pictures and descriptions. Like RPDUC
said. It should not be too much trouble to make the new Q
fit the older bikes.
I was wondering?!?!? Would the new 08-09 sub frame fit
the older bikes. From the pictures it looks like the new frame
has a different welded mounting bracket and the tabs are
re-located.
If you could fix the swage problem, where would the new
silencer fit in relation to the old. If it were only the matter
of designing an adapter plate between the old sub-frame
tabs and the new Q mounting tabs. That might be the easiest
solution. If this fit behind the side panels and did not hit the tire.
OR  all of us with older GasGas start a letter writting campaign
to FMF and force them to design a pipe for us "ole'farts" :)
Thanks, Jeff

This was REALLY easy.

I just did it in about an hour on my lunch break. Well almost.. I still have to weld a tab to the subframe for the front mount, but that will also be very easy.

I cut the swaged ends off both at about what looked like the right angle, stuck the TCII end on the stinger and hung the Stealth off the back hanger. A little bit more fussy grinding for a gap free fit, tacked it in place on the bike, took it off welded it up. Not my best weld job, but it won't break.

The plastic went right back on with only a 1/4 spacer between it and the lower tab on the subframe.

Yes if you could fix the minimal swage problem and stuck it on at the "new" angle it would be quite easy to fab up an adapter plate, or maybe make two separate ones. I thought about doing that, but this was immediate gratification. :D

If that subframe can hold my fat arse it surely will hold this can. I'm not the LEAST bit worried about it.

Please post more photo's of the conversion......I would be interested in conveting my 99 over to the "hush" S/A.

Thanks

What would you like to see? I didn't take any before I welded it up so no go there. It's really not much of a deal. Any competent welder should be able to fit these things up.

I fabbed up a new front hanger tab for the subframe this morning and will probably weld that on Sat. a.m. I can snap a few more pics with the number plate off and maybe a shot from the rear?

Nice bike, the black and white is sharp.

Thanks PEB, I'm not really out to win any style shows but I do like white. I have a white Duc, a white Husky and a white Ford E-150. If I could have found some reasonably priced white shrouds I probably would have changed them, but the black is growing on me. I even toyed with the idea of graphics... but nah, it's just a dirt bike.

A few more pics. I recut the weld on the inlet pipe because in my haste first time around I had a little twist in it. While I had it apart I decided to lower the angle a bit. It works a little bit better this way. Less interference with the bracket for the number plate.

Close-up shows the 2" x 1" x 1/4" chunk of alu that I used to drop the back end down and the new tab welded for the front mount. Also 1/4" alu plate. I need more practice welding aluminum...:o

I'm thinking of learning to weld aluminium. Curious - did you weld the plate on with the plastics in place? Whenever I weld steel I am shocked by how much I can manage to melt that looks a safe distance to me! Wondering if ali welds cooler etc
