Frame Questions

This is a double post from the Body section.

I am in the middle of a chasis overhaul. I have noticed that the frame rail on the clutch side is bent. Bewteen the swingarm pivot and the lower motor mount the frame rail is bent up and touches the case. The outer smaller rail is also bent up to within 3/8" from the clutch cover. Would it be worth it to pull the engine and try to straigent things out or should I source a new used frame. I am about a grand into the chasis rehab so I am kinda commited to keeping the bike. One more question, Are the 125-300 frames 05+ all the same?

The 125's have a smaller engine cradle. The bigger bike should be all the same but I can't say for sure. Some one on here will have the answer for you though.

Looks like I need another frame. Hey Steve does Brian have another race bike I can ride into the ground?

How did you fix it. I have been advised to leave the engine in the frame and pry against the cases to bend the frame out and away from the engine. Seems like a good way to end up needed a new frame and cases.

if you have the frame bare, you could just put the offending area in a press... i wouldn't pry against cases or anything else - you need to isolate where the bend is, and then go at that area only...

Is this the aftermath of a few seasons of a Hyde plate and bodacious Rock and log hopping Paul?

Hey Paul I wouldn't pry against your cases.
I remember reading within the last few months an article in Dirtbike or Dirtrider about a endurocross bike that had the same frame issues you describe.

They took it apart and had a fabricator bend the tubes back as straight as he could even though they were pinched closed. Then he added half tube stock around the damaged tubing to essentially make a new tube around the original. This made for a super stout bottom cradle and still looked good.

Brian does have a 08 Ec300 with all the WEC / EWC factory inspired mods (think of it as a pre-production Nambotin model as his mechanics actually helped build some of it) for sale.

The suspension is by Trail Tricks (Sachs front and rear) with a re-programed CDI, RB Designs head and carb mods and complete clutch and top end rebuild. The bike also has Flex bars and re-enforced radiators.

The bike has 2 seasons on it.

Price is in the mid to low $4G range.

bent frames

for sure don"t be prying against your cases they will break.remove your motor and put in the motor mount bolts with an oversize pipe on the bolts to act as a spacer. This will keep them in the right spot.Don't be afraid to use a little heat on the affected areas while you are prying or using a small bottle jack to straighten it.If it"s really bad you can cut out and replace the frame rails. While you are at it weld the mounting nut in place so you don"t need two wrenchs to snug your bolts tight.Take your time and keep checking your fit, its actually not that bad.Good luck

Though I should probably use this as an excuse to buy a welder, I don't have any skills to go with it. I have a line on a nice 05 frame. I am 99 percent certain that will work for my 07 components. Can anyone confirm this for sure?

I am sure the frame didn't bend it self, and yes my antics are certainly to blame. I like the idea of adding a little bulk to the frame rails. I am also going to have skid plate mounts welded on.

Never tried to swap, but from what has been documented the frame geometry has not been changed since 2005. So I would expect it to be bolt in swap.

Ha Ha we know the frame didn't bend itself. Figure you were running a Hyde as some have complained about bending their frame rails while running these plates. I have actually bent the smaller frame cradles on 2 of my bikes with aluminum plates. Hit hard enough with anything and it'll bend.

The Hyde has been beefed up substantially with a sheet of 3/8 HDPE plastic.

This is a pick of it last spring. It's had lots of action since then.

Thats a good idea. Was that a piece you had lying around?

Thinking covering the whole bottom with it would be the hot ticket. Those small frame cradle tubes are so venerable.

porta-power hydraulic set

some of these have a "seperator" attachement , or rig the push piston appropriatetly ...if it fits in there ,or against something solid

Roscoe-I might fit a wider piece on as well. I got the stuff at Tap Plastic. It is likely the same as a cutting board. I have also used the HDPE to make bar risers, a chainsaw rack and a rear disc guard.

You'll have to come up this spring and spend a day riding some "off the grid" stuff.

So the plan is to beef up the new used frame with some sections of tubing and weld some skidplate mounts and radiator guard mounts. Any special considerations with the gasgas frame and welding?

Paul, never had any issues when having welding done to the frame.
Its chromoly so it can be done to look as good as stock. The finish will catch on fire thats about it. But truly I haven't had to do much welding over the years, a little here and there.
Your plan sounds good. You may have to enter Endurocross in Everett to really test it when its done.;)

Just give me a heads up on a ride and I'll do my best to be there. I'd enjoy that.
