Gas Tank Cap? - new owner...

Hi,

I bought an 08' EC 300 a couple of months ago and Love the bike. I used to have a crf 250x - no comparison.

I have a small question though. I dropped my gas tank cap on the garage floor today and the rubber seal popped out and later I noticed a small cap and steel ball on the floor. I assume these came out of the gas cap?

I put the steel ball inside the main housing of the cap, covered it with the little cup, then put the rubber seal back in... can someone please let me know if this is correct?

thanks very much...

Mike.

You got it right. That rubber will continue to shrink and fall into the tank sometime.Just cut a rubber gasget(from any reinforced, fuel resistant rubber) and place over original rubber seal to hold it in place and provide a seal.

The new caps are apparently a better design.

I have been successfuly running my cap with no rubber insert. Plastic cap against the top of the tank still seals perfectly.

The other issue with the OEM rubber cap gaskets is that they completely cover the small center cap with the vent holes. There are very small holes in the rubber to allow venting. While they shrink and harden from ethanol in the fuel, these small holes can actually shrink shut and block venting. It happened to me, you would never know the gasket was actually rubber at one time it was so hard and the holes were barely noticable. What I do is just cut a new rubber gasket as described above, a ring without the center section. Bond the plastic center cap with super glue the the gas cap body and you should be good.
