Is a full rebuild worth it for a 2008 GasGas EC300? (Cylinder + Piston)

05 is the year they changed the engine cases and you could fit a e start. If you got a picture of the left side of your engine, I can tell you if it's possible to install the e start. If you have a 05+ engine, it's just 100% bolt on.

Thanks mate
I am totally clueless on this. I'm the only one left riding at this age and I'm always on my own. I worry about starting it if I hurt a leg in a get off. Hitting a Kangaroo is the worry as it's beyond my control. I do carry a Garmin with a subscription, but you don't want to be rescued from some of the places we can get into. Is this photo good enough? I can get a better one but this is already here.

My big dream was/is to go "down under" and ride that dingo fence across Australia. But im way to afraid of snakes and spiders to ever realise that dream 😝 Pic is good enough. You got a true 05 model there, making it 100% bolt on to use a E-start. Enduropuro.it and motocrosscenter.com both sell the complete kits and the parts to get a E-start. Not always they have them in stock, but they do sell them when available. If you look at your stator cover/left engine case. There is a "hump" on the top of the stator cover/engine case. The 04 and older has a round hump. And the 05 and newer has a square hump.

Not much at the moment. But hopefully soon in stock: https://www.enduropuro.it/shop/it/209-avviamento-elettrico
https://www.motocrosscenter.com/shop/en/1556-start had even less parts right now(but hopefully soon)
You can also just Google the individual part numbers from the e-start. Here is THE place to get manuals: https://www.motocrosscenter.com/shop/en/content/8-gas-gas-parts-manuals

I saw On Any Sunday in Sydney in 73, and 5 weeks later bought a DT2 Yam 250 Trail. So 53 years later still trail riding an 05 300ec I bought new.

I really enjoyed reading this thread. I bought mine new in 05 it's a blue 300 with red plastic. Within a month I had regreased the steering head and linkages with a good quality Teflon grease. In 21 years I have only replaced 2 x Water pump seals and the fork seals once. Also the fork compression adjuster seal. Expantion chamber seals also. That's it. The head has not come off even once. Such a rock solid bike. I had the Ohlins serviced after running it in. So just preventative maintenance only. 50:1 Ester based synthetic oil.

Its true the PWK does require proper tuning. Especially the needle. They run way to rich and lack a real kick. Sort the needle and it just flys. I do crank up rebuilds on vintage 73 RD350, 78 Husky 360, Maico 440, KTM MC5 250 so its not a problem to rebuild. Just not necessary. I fit Keihins to everything including the RD. What can you say about these bikes. Just Awesome. I was at a hard enduro on the weekend and did not see anything I wanted lol ..... I would never sell mine. I turn 70 in a few weeks. Love this bike. When the time comes I'll put a new cylinder and piston on it 1k aud .... cheep for 21+ years. I'm only trail riding it. I'm retired. It does not get a lot of use but puts a big grin on my face every time I take it out. It's tuned to perfection now. No stumble of the pilot. I use it as an ADV bike. I'm too old to ride my 04 950 "S" KTM Dakar winner. It's too high, too heavy so I fitted a long Transmission to the Gasser, the max available, and can sit on 100kph heading home on the road. Usually 30+ km of tar. 13lt tank. What can't these old bikes do :) .... I might grab a new cylinder this year. Put it on the shelf. I fitted V-Force 3 also replacing the Boyson Reeds in 06-7. Love this bike so much. I can't remember joining this web site. This might be my first post. You guys have been great help over the years when I was looking for info. I'm an old 70's mechanic.

I guess I would like an e-start. I get left behind while trying to find footing to kick start it........

I do wonder is it possible to fit the Rieju e-start to early bikes? I can generally fit anything if it's possible to do so.

Hi! I just read your post and it’s amazing that you’ve kept your 300EC for 21 years without opening the engine! I have a 2008 GasGas 300 and I’m a bit of a beginner, so I’m always worried about breaking something.
I dont know how many hours does my bike has, but the piston has about 49 hours on it now. It's currently on Bore D (the last size). I just measured the compression and it’s at 165 PSI, and it pulls ok to good. I also checked the rod—it’s a Wossner, it has some side-to-side play (axial), but zero up-and-down play, so I guess it’s still solid.

I saw your post and I’m curious: after all these years, do you have any idea what your compression is? Or how many hours do you think you have on that original piston? Also, what’s your secret for keeping the same piston for 21 years without seizing it or losing power?
I’m always afraid to push it too hard on climbs because I don't want to break it, but seeing your story makes me think these Gassers are indestructible if you treat them right. Cheers from Romania! Also this is my bike !
