Kick start issue.

Hi all,

I'm new to GG and technically I have a 2011 Fantic TZ300 but the motor is a GG300.

I have a strange kick start issue. When i test rode the bike before i bought it it would kick over fine 2nd kick from cold. It has e-start and although the e-start would turn over it would not fire as the battery was dead and would only turn a couple of times and die.

Now as soon as i got the bike home i tried to kick it over, nothing, the kickstart lever would not even move. I charged the battery and with a full charge it will not trun over, although all connections seem good as there is a click from the estart when trying the button. In 1st gear, clutch out, rear wheel locks, clutch in and she will roll. I put the bike in top gear and rolled her forward and the she will roll with clutch out and in gear with resistance.

So just to put this in perspective, i'm unfamiliar with tearing down engines but i'm an engineer of sorts, as my background is civil, electrical and computers/networks so i assume i'm smart enough to follow good advice ;-)
I'm hoping this is something relatively simple involving the kickstart gear but i'm looking for some advice on specific checks with pics if possible as i don't even have a manual.

Thanks in advance

Jamie

Engineers often make the worst mechanics, we over complicate everything (I'm an engineer :D ).

Pulling the clutch in won't prove anything since that disconnects the crank from the transmission. So if the top end was seized the bike would still roll in neutral or with the clutch in. However with the clutch out you said it rolled that means everything was turning over.

I had a finger on my clutch basket break off which caused a similar issue. Very easy to check by pulling off the clutch cover.

Sorry it's been a while since i touched the bike.

I've now taken off the clutch cover and there's no sign of any damage to the clutch basket or plates and discs.

With the bike in gear and clutch out she will roll and turn the clutch plates.

The kickstart lever just won't turn it over at all and there's plenty of juice in the battery but when trying the electric start there's just a click. Like it's trying to turn over but meeting too much resistance.

I dropped the oil and it looks good, just the usual tiny debris on the magnet, nothing substantial.

Am i looking at taking the right side engine case off and checking out the kick assembly or could it be the electric leg?

Any help and advice appreciated :-)

Cheers

Jamie

Few quick and easy things to check.

Remove the pipe and peek in the exhaust - check piston for any signs of damage/debris.

Remove fly wheel cover. Check the stator and starter gears.

Remove RHS engine cover and check the kick start shaft, gears etc.

I'd probably start with the flywheel side as thats most accessable.

Take off the flywheel cover and see if you can turn the crank. If the gearbox is in neutral and the crank will turn, then you have a gearbox problem. If it doesn't turn, then it could be crank/piston/primary gears etc. It is rare for the kickstart to be a problem; when it gives trouble the result is usually a failure to engage properly.

Could the starter motor be frozen up,partially seized and the starter gear still partially engaged, hung up,isn't releasing.Maybe in a high gear you can partially turn over a seized starter motor.

plain easy! take out your spark plug, put the bike in a gear and push it forward.
if it does turn over, you should be fine...

Yeah I'd be pulling the plug, taking the LHS cover off & turning the flywheel by hand. if its not as easy as that then start pulling things off. Aiming at the starter sprag clutch is probably a good idea, but that right hand side cover would be off in short order too.

I think it's safe to say this bike didn't get any mechanical love from it's previous owner. The electric start Bendix is rusted and seized solid. TBH it's not a great design but it looks like the gaskets were damaged and that's where the water ingress was. The motor turns over fine now, although i haven't started it yet as a new kickstart lever is on my shopping list too. Can anyone recommend a good parts supplier that delivers to Aus, the Bendix looks expensive ;-) ?

Cheers
