Ktm vs. Gas gas

I hear you :) I had to throw down 50% cash deposit to order my 2010 site unseen let alone having a ride. It was an impluse decision I made after spending 5mins on a friends 250EXC. I wanted a 2 stroke and had the same choices. (KTM/Berg/GG). I did some reading and next thing I'd decided I would have the gasser if the price was right, and it was.

I have no regrets and this is from someone who is using the Ohlins 888/Sachs 48mm combo. The forks can be a bit harsh at times (square edges) but not to the point that I have had any work done to them. The 2012 models will have the Zoke CC 48mms which from all reports are very nice and I'm sure would work well for you. The Ohlins 888 soaks up everything I can throw at it.

I ran my EC300 stock engine for 75hrs until first top end. It was a bit finicky to jet and had quite a large squish which no doubt played a part (2.6mm) Once dialled in though it was a very nice. It wasn't a fire breathing dragon, but was deceptively fast with how it delivers it and works with the chasis/suspension. My riding improved substanitally (coming off a 250F which I thought was easy to ride fast).

There are quite a few people riding 2011 250 SDs on the forum so hopefully some can chime in with some more relevant info.

I don't have a 250GG but do have the 300 so it's not exactly what you are looking for but...my 300 after replacing the stock needle is super smooth with no dips or big hit. It pulls extreamly well and better than the brief ride I had on a KTM 300. The ergos, engine, handling and traction combo on the GG bikes make them hard to beat IMHO. I do remember Kelly (motosportz) saying his 250 GG will out run his friends KTM 250 although the KTM "feels" faster. Hope it helps you a little.

Thanks guys.

If I'm putting two and two together it seems like the Gas Gas might be a little lazier than the KTM, which isn't necessarily bad as long as it's not doggy off the bottom, and I get the impression that it isn't doggy.

Any other feedback would be appreciated.

I dont think a gasgas 250 rev's any slower than the ktm 250, I've not rode many ktm 250's but the ones I've spent seat time on were setup to be smooth with no abrupt hit, I think the red spring adds the hit, but it's really not giving any more power, just making it surge

Yes, the red spring makes the bike feel more aggressive. Would you say that the Gas Gas is as smooth as the KTM's that were tuned to be smooth?

My problem is that it is unlikely that I will have a chance to ride one before I buy one.

Let's meet somewhere between here and there and go for a ride. You won't be disappointed.

The offer is open to anyone as long as I don't have to dismantle the bike and count it as checked luggage.

Don't forget you can swap the ignition easy on the GG from the heavy 2K-3 to a light 2K-2, which is what I prefer. I assure you it is not lazy!
