Hello guys,

I'm new to the forum. Last week I was out of town, and a friend took my bike for a ride. He coulnd't start it, so he pulled it with and ATV. The bike didn't started because the fuel line was clogged. Since he pulled the bike several times and there was no fuel in the engine, he messed up the nickasil of the cylinder wall.

Can anyone give some advice of where to buy a new cylinder? Or maybe a used one in good shape? I'm not a pro, I have the bike for fun so I really don't need the maximum performance from the engine. What about resleeving the cylinder and using an aftermarket piston?

Thanks and happy riding!

Cylinder

I don't know the basic new parts prices on Gas Gas, or where you live, but I briefly had an 06 KTM 300xc(exc Europe) and I was told a new one would be around $800. In 03 I priced having a replate done on a Nikasil, and there was a company in Alabama that replated for about $300, and there was also the option of putting a iron sleave in it, but I don't remember the cost.

Also, you get better wear and slghtly more HP with Nikisil provided your bike is properly oiled . As long as you change the rings on a regular basis, a Nikisl cylinder should outlast several pistons, it's just once the rings break up and dig through the plate in the wall, you a looking at spending money.

Also, one thing you didn't mention, is the plate severally damaged? I've heard that you can sometimes just scuff the wall or lightly seize it and a hone job will let you run a new piston in it. For jap bikes, there is a company that sells pistons that are not a full size oversize. They actually aren't purposely made that way, they are actually seconds that comeout a a few thousands large and used for that purpose. I don't know who makes the Gas Gas pistons, but in Japan one company makes all the pistons for stock bikes, and you can buy them for 1-5 thousands oversized.

I know that's a lot of information to process, but you didn't give a lot to work with, and I've forgotten information I've heard.

You never mentioned where you live. There ae several places in th U.S., that do that type work, both East and West coast, and if you live in Europe, I
heard of a place in the U.K., and there have to be at one or two other places.

Good luck

Thanks for your reply Matt. I live in Costa Rica, and the avalability of spare parts down here is quite poor. For GasGas there is only one dealer, and it really sucks. They only carry basic stuff, like brake pads and chains and that kind of stuff.

Down here there's no place to do the replating. I might send the cylinder up to the US to have it replated. However I wanted to check the option of getting a new cylinder.

My current cylinder is in really bad shape. Since my friend pulled the bike with an ATV with no fuel running into the engine, the rings got stuck and broke, causing deep damage to the Nickasil.

I thought about the resleeving job, but I would like to keep my bike to the factory specs if possible.

I know there should be a place where I can get a used cylinder in good shape, but being down here makes things a little bit hard for me to find that place. :(

Juan.

I have a cylinder off my 2001 SE 250 that can be replated.
I have some friends going to Costa Rica on Feb 12th. for a dual sport ride.
If you like they can bring the cylinder with them.
I would have to send it off to be replated though.

One of my KTM riding buddies had his cylinder replated for $200US. But there was some welding involved.
So my cylinder may be cheaper. Only problem is, they will need the piston before the work can be performed.
With only 3 weeks before my boys leave for Costa Rica, I don't think we'll get it done in time.

You may get a new cyclinder/piston/gaskets and have it shipped to me, then have my guys bring it to you.
