Can anyone think of a reason why this 2003 DE300 would have these small shim washers in the transmission? They were all huddled together around the magnetic drain plug.

This reminds me of one of those shows where the ER Docs pull foreign objects from bodies.

The trans and clutch appeared to be in pretty good shape and the bikes trans and clutch worked well.

These shims are very small ~ 1cm for trans gear shims. No other significant debris. Since we have owned it it has always had oil in it. The gears, shift forks and shift drum look fine.
 
They were all originally 11mm O.D. and 8mm I.D. and 0.33mm thick. I did not see any signs of the power valve governor damage. While the PV governor shaft is 8mm the manual does not show any such washers.

I think these washers are foreign to the bike and the mystery is how they got there.

Shims or washers are usually captive on a shaft.
I don't see how some of them are still intact.
 
When I split the cases they were all around the drain magnet. Some showed witness marks from playing with the trans gears but others were still in good shape.

I think I can safely rule out my wife as a suspect because this GG is my godson/nephew's bike. ;) I did think that someone else wanted to do this bike harm, but the trans oil fill hole is just a little too small for these washers to fit through.

I think the shim washers have been in the engine since it was built unless it was rebuilt by the previous owner(s).
