new GG, couple VIN and ID questions.

I picked up what title states as a 2004 Gas Gas 250 (either mc or ec?)

VIN is VTREC2500E1138010 on title but can't find a vin on frame anywhere?

Side # decal says ec 250

but forks are 50mm marz, no lights, 19" rear wheel

no #'s on engine either?

Maybe a factory race bike that never got #'s stamped? maybe frame got replaced and engine cases at one time? maybe started as EC but someone put on forks, wheel and removed EC electrical???

pictures attached, please help me out......

Not sure when they changed but earlier MC had 4sp trans. It could have been changed but chain guide is same as MC also.

Maybe a frame paint that got to thick. Should be on the steering head, right side (opposite lock cylinder)
VIN # VTREC2500E1138010 =
EC250 E=04
VIN Decoder:
1st, 2nd, and 3rd digits = Region/Country/Manufacturer
4th to 8th digits = Model
9th digit = Check digit or place holder
10th digit = Year (Note: some European VIN's use letters. 2000 = "0" or "A")
11th digit = Assembly plant
12th to 17th = Serial numbe

The engine number should be by the gear selector shaft, just to the front. That is where my 200's id. By the looks of the picture...it is hard to tell.

no engine numbers (not even a milled spot were they would normally stamp them)

and nothing on neck of frame either.. I starred at it for a few minutes to see if i could find anything! the frame looks like factory paint, only thing i can think of is it was replaced at one time and never stamped with vin? UPDATE: had someone tell me these came Nickel Plated from GG?? so it frame was powder coated grey that would explain where that vin on neck is?????

I got the clear title, so not worried.. just want to know the story behind this thing.. its very intriguing..

Apologies, they did powedercoat the frames in 2004. They were nickel before that.

From GasGas history thread in the general discussion forum.
The EC ?Dealer Edition? was created by GasGas Motors America early in the 2003 model year in response to the elimination of the US exclusive XC models created by GGNA for NETRA enduro and hare scrambles racing. The DE was created with US dealer input, hence the designation ?Dealer Edition? or DE. Dealers had the option to add optional parts and accessories to the model as they, or the customer, desired. The EC ?Dealer Edtion? or DE included many of the features of the EC ? it had FMF ?Fatty? and Turbine Core II exhaust, Michelin S-12 tires, D.I.D. U-line rims, signal lamps or mirrors, choice of 43mm WP or 46mm Ohlins fork, O-ring chain, Ohlins shock, six speed transmission, Chromoly nickel plated frame (until 2004 when they began powdercoating), oversize spokes, hydraulic clutch, and Boyesen reed valves. Beginning in 2004, the WP forks were dropped in favor of forks from Marzocchi and the Ohlins fork option remained as an upgrade.

The 50mm forks threw me a bit, my '04 300 (not DE) has grey PC frame, came with 45mm silver Zokes, did the MCs come with 50mm? 4 spd would indicate a MC, 6spd prolly means a fork swap somewhere in it's life. Hard to verify with out a frame VIN

motor is 6sp.
the color of the upper tubes and big marzocchi decal has me thinking the forks were added on at one time

(from everything i've seen all zokes for OEM use are a shiny finish and only have a small marzocchi shiver decal on the bottom of the upper tubes, but the ones they sold on consumer market back then had this flat finish and the big marzocchi decal and lower tubes have the black chrome finish)

I may do a little sanding on neck to see if i can get vin to show under paint.

It's an '04 MC250 with a 6 spd. The early MCs had 4 spuds, so this is probably all original. GasGas made relatively few MCs so no special graphics, etc. It should have a more aggressive CDI which is good, as the '03/'04 was a little soft, as definitely has the 2K-2 ignition. No VIN# is a mystery, but the GG VIN was non-conforming in that year anyway. Nice bike, some LTR goodies as well. Good luck

i have a title for it with the EC250 in the VIN, just haven't found the vin on the frame yet.. when i get a chance i'll send down paint on neck to find it.

any idea on cdi box what to look for? stampings or something to determine what one it is or part #....
