Noise?

What the bottom end sound like when it's not doing so well?

I heard something that didn't sound right, but I'm new to 2t's so it all sounds funny.

Well. Rattling, clinking and clanking are all bad. Be ware, some powervalves rattle and that isn't a bad thing, but is annoying.

Grinding is a bad sign.

If it sounds like a jar full of marbles rolling across a table, that is bad.

All this aside, the GasGas seems to be a noisy engine and transmission anyway. The clutches are known to make sound under heavy load.

If the bike has low hours with good oil, I'd keep riding it.

It's has unknown hours on it and I can't say the maintenance was done very well. It looked clean, but as I dug into it more. I have found simple items that all bikes have in common. All the basic stuff I did to my Harley I did to this.

It doesn't sound like grinding, more of a rattle when at lower RPM and just chugging along.

Typical gasgas chain slap. Very noticeable at low rpm's when getting on the gas. Tighten it up a little and try it out.

Oh, that's why it sounds from the left hand side and on very low rpm (gears 3-4-5, never heard it in 1 and 2). I've been chasing that rattle for a few rides now.

Thanks for clearing it out :D

p.s. chain slap looked good when i bought the bike, will have another look at it tonight

Here's my old KTM 640 with a very shagged bottom end. It's similar on 2 strokes, a lot deeper rattle than the top end https://youtu.be/Avb-GXMWT6E

Very common in the Gasser's is;

Exhaust rattle - put your foot on the exhaust and rev, does it go away?
Power valve rattle - take the right hand cover off, in the rest position is the cam firmly against the stop?
Clutch rattle - pull the clutch lever in, does it go away?
Engine mounts - are the top mounts intact? They tend to snap, are all mounts tight? If so, remove the nuts and replace the nylock nuts
Clutch hub nut - take the plates out, does the centre nut turn?

Bang on the money!

Plus add in anything else that has the potential to make contact under vibrations. Plastics that have some give, loose washers, skid plates contacting frame rails, rad shrouds against the rads/brace housing. Even rad braces themselves.

Comes down to not stressing over what you hear immediately; its easy to fear the worst! and doing a little investigation into possible causes. Onces identified look at resolving/living with it depending on your tolerance.

The above list is a great place to start looking!

If it's the chain, my preference is to keep it loose and live with the rattle. It will wear out faster if it's too tight. Believe it or not, I've changed my sprockets once since I've bought the bike new. This winter it's getting a new chain finally (and sprockets again ).

I'm 3 lower rollers down so far. The chain slap under "optimal" tension is enough to rip it out. Food for thought, better to run without imho

Yep, my rollers need replacing too. Plus the chain guide on the swing arm. Will order all of them once I find what clutch covers interchange between years 'cause that's the highest on the plate at the moment.

Yep sounds goooooooood quit worrying go learn how to ride a two stroke you will never go back

I'm a worry wart! Keeps me out of trouble from time to time....I am riding tomorrow with some guys I never met, made sure they understood I'm SLOW....

cool go have some fun on that thing :D. Good that you hoked up with some riders listen and learn from them ;). we will need a ride report

Bravo, where in E TN are you? If you ride at Moto Mountain or Durhamtown I can meet up with you. Also, you are welcome to bring the bike to my home "shop" and I can go over it with you and address any concerns you may have. I am located NE part of metro ATL about 1.5hrs west of Durhamtown.
