noisy exhaust

hi guys,

i find my bike to be quite noisy (ec 200 my 2001)
normally i'd say, i'll repack my (stock) silencer, but the thing is, it's like the most noise comes from the (messico) front pipe??
no leaks on the header...
bike performs well so a clogged end can can't really be the problem...
never repacked before though, but we don't get to ride all that often.
can i use something else to repack the silencer or does that have to be THE real stuff for silencers?

tanks, Hannes.

Your definetly due for a repack...I've seen guys use regular attic insulation..but it doesn't last as long as the real stuff

Replace the orings in the head pipe. This is a common problem, those orings are easy to damage but if they are damaged that pipe will rattle and leak like a broken tea kettle. I have a whole bag of orings specifically for that problem. As soon as I replace the orings the noise stops completely.

the pipe doesn't ratlle at all, not that i notice that is.
i'll replace the orings, since i have them and see, after that i'll look into repacking the silencer.
i'll post if all is good, or not...
but how woud you explain that the noise seems to come thrue the front pipe (messico) i thought that was a very sturdy expansion chamber?

I had the same problem. Its amazing how many of the stock silencers come apart inside. A bit surprising given they are FMF units.

Another thing to check are the rubber mounting points. When they fail or sack out things get more noisy.

How and where you say the sound is coming from sounds like your power valve flap is stuck open, but your low end power would be effected if the flap was stuck open.
Did this happen slowly or all at once?
When you pull your pipe to install the new O-rings, have a look that your exhaust valve is down in place and is not stuck open.

that's good thinkin' :-)
i allways seem to have had enough low end power,if not, i'll be even more HAPPY about the 200! :-D
i'll let you know if you were right (or not) ;)

rubbermounts have been replaced, just the other day, that did make a lil' difference, not in noise, but the rattling went away.
my stock muffler is def not an FMF (i wish!) my bike's a 2001...

I got a 2010, just repacked my silencer, easy job and proper packing is cheap, tie some grip wire around the packing to help it slide in.
Made quite a difference to the noise on mine.
