I'm on my third Monster... I like 'em.
The S2r series monsters use Magura "fat" bars stock but I don't know how the top triple was configured on the earlier 900's. On the early 2000ish "M" models the bottom 7/8 bar clamp was cast into the triple so adapters would be needed to go to fat bars.
I'd be more concerned about the possible I'll affect on handling brought about by sliding the forks up in the triples far enough to mount clipons. Those older monsters were notoriously butt heavy so they generally benefitted from "some" lowering of the front end but one can go too far.
However I think it's possible that the forks protruded far enough to mount clips in stock config. Or, the forks could have been swapped for better adjustable units from a ST, SS, Superbike (common practice on monsters) At any rate I'd try and verify the geometry before getting to aggressive on that 'ole 900. I remember lots of talk about tankslappers and the "necessity" for steering dampers on those '90's monsters on the old DucatiMonster.org site.
