Sharp and loud engine sound

Hi,

As already told in a previous post that youve might have read, I had a spooge problem, which seems to be better.
Today a friend of mine rode my bike and I was standing there without a helmet and my god its really really loud. It sounds like someone is hitting cooking pots. Muffler packing is a little black but in good condition in my opinion.

The rubber sleeve that connects the pipe and muffler is New so that should be good.

I have 2 Air intakes on each side of the airbox, might these cause that sound

The pipe is an FMF. Bike a 2012 ec300.

Anyone has got some tips?

Grts!

Mine was really loud and raspy when I got it. The exhaust packing looked okay on the outside but inside it was clogged, as were the holes on the pipe. I cleaned all the holes out (which was a messy and crap job!) and replaced the packing. Now its a totally different quieter sound.

Tiddles, what packing did you use? Mats of fiberglas? I dont really know the english word for it so I hope you understand what I mean :)

I've always just called it 2 stroke exhaust packing, you can find it on eBay, amazon ect.

I did mine over the weekend.

Very similar. Hadn't soaked right through but clogged up the core. Haven't started it but imagine will be back to its old self.

I just cut up some ROXUL sound insulation and use that. I usually always have some laying around from a job. It works as well as the store bought stuff.

HI,

I installed new packing, I bought the FMF packing set. I did it exactly as the package said, but only 3/4 of the packing comes out, there is a little part at the end of the can that stays in with rivets. The instructions only include the main part, not the riveted so I assume that shouldn't be replaced.

The core looked good, no holes were clogged. I cleaned it and reinstalled the new packing. I"m not an expert so I have no idea the packing was worn.

Pics enclosed!

Your old packing doesn't look too bad. It's more like 15% of the packing that stays behind on the spark arrestor section. The front section is all you can change without drilling rivets. The biggest issue when it comes to sound is whether or not the tube holes are plugged. Next it's whether or not the packing is soaked. This can be from oil or moisture. If you drown the bike and get the packing wet, it will perform poorly. Riding in cold weather will eventually fill the packing with condensation.

Hi,

Went for a ride today and the sharpy sound is gone! really much much better.

Appears that the old packing was clogged indeed and therefore the gases couldnt get through the little holes of the core.

thanks to all!
