sub frame swaps...

I've been reading a few of the plastic fitment posts, and it sounds like quite a few people have put late model rear subframes and air boxes on early bikes.
i have a 04 ec, and im just wondering if it is possable to put a new gen subframe, ( prob a 08/09 or somthing). If so what are the mods required?

Besides the subframe, the airbox (some have done just the rear 1/2, I did the whole thing) changing that makes the plastic, from the tank back and seat need changed also

Hi Dean,
I found the original subframe to be very soft, prone to bending and breaking... i am pretty hard on my bikes...
i currently have a kx subframe in it, which is stronger, a little heavyer, and not quite the right shape... i had to modify the exhust and seat mounts, and the angles are a little out, the back end looks a little high but it works fine.
my idea was if i changed the rear subframe, updating the plastics as i went, i would in effect update the whole bike.
But after painting up the kx subframe, and recovering the seat the bike looks pretty nice now, except for the scratched plastics....

i broke my aluminum subframe on my 2000 twice. i switched in the 99 steel subrame. much stronger, but 3 lbs heavier...

'07+ subframe is much stronger, thicker exhaust mount tabs, and also has a flatter profile.

I'm still using the stock '04 fuel tank. I have a large tank and also a stock tank from an '06. Only gripe I have about the '04 tank is it is a little hard to fill (has the 1/4 turn trials type fill) but I just haven't took the time to change them out. 300 & 250 both will go full length in a 2 hour hare scramble on th stock tank, at least at my pace
