The Perils of World Travel

If you have a chance to talk to Mark at GF....ask him about the gentleman on the plane from Atlanta to Paris who smelled so bad he made my eyes water and then ask him about the sausage in France! He ordered a grilled sausage at a restaurant on Tuesday and I thought he was going to spit it out. I wish I had a camera! The look on his face was priceless! :D

LOL you should have reached up and got your air mask :D! Oh....and I would never eat any meat or meat type foods from France; don't they eat snails . Next time I place an order with Mark I'll have to bust his chops a little.

Clay,

My wife travels the world for her job and has been to France and sampled the moldy sausage! On the flip side the guys at the plant she visited would go hang gliding at lunch.

A few years ago I flew to Houston to have Mark Sanders fix my collarbone that needed a bone graft. On the way back I had a guy like your friend sit next to me! Difference is though I had a big jar of Vicoden from the good doc.:)

In 2006 I volunteered to help the folks at TTC with their first World Trials event. In the week prior to the event, one of the tasks I was given was to drive the French FIM official to each of the sections so he could inspect and approve them. He was a well-dressed man, and at first appeared to be well-groomed. Anyway, we're driving along in my side-by-side utility vehicle when I suddenly got a whiff of something rotten. It was like I drove over the large intestine of a 2-week-old road kill, releasing concentrated nastiness. It took me more than a few seconds to realize that unbelievable stench was coming from the individual sitting next to me!

Different cultures and approach to personal hygiene. Thats the norm for most Europeans. I've worked with German engineers visiting here and traveled in Russia and the same thing, clothes changed once a week needed or not. Nice people, and we should probably not take this too far and piss some of our Euro friends off.

There is a limit though when dealing with other cultures in mixed company and some guys clearly step over it.

That was the second worse choice of food i have ever tasted! A couple of years ago in Spain, Dustin ordered pigs foot by mistake, same horrible texture! No more cultural diverse stuff for me..cheeseburgers from here on out!

Clay was freaking about the smelly dude, so we drank beer on the way to try and forget about the smells only to upset the guy in front of us who was trying to sleep at 4 pm. I guess we were too loud for him! Damm americans!

As far as I know the smelly guy could have been from GA. I don't know where he was from but I do know he smelled bad. Seems to me that he could have planned a little better on the bath thing since he knew he was going to be practically shoulder to shoulder with others for 8 hours.

The food I had in France was good because I only ordered steak, burgers and pizza. Mark was the brave one!

We were staying at at Holiday Inn and planned to have breakfast at the McDonald's next to the HI. We were shocked to find they were not open for breakfast. But when they were open they served beer!

Thing is I'd bet the Vikings smelled pretty bad too, and would probably cut your head off if you said so.

I could say a 1000 things here but being a mod I have to keep a balance.:D

I heard the Spanish food was pretty good. My wife says Italy was really good, in Japan it sucked. My favorites are Costa Rica and Baja Mexico, awesome food!

I find Americans being scathing about food slightly amusing, go look at your cheese and tell me if cows have anything orange in them.....

The only people in the world who can look own their nose at people about sausage are south africans, and as a rule Australians barely tolerate saffas, so this is a big statement.

Flak jacket has been donned.

I too find it interesting when Americans talk about food, with nearly 70% of the population overweight they surely know food.:D

This is true. :) America is fat.

Ironically, when I go over to Belgium I find a I gain a few pounds eating all the french cooking! The food is great and the beer is tasty.

Its not so much our food alone but the culture of how we work and go about our days including eating habits. Europe is MUCH more laid back and less hectic. Thats why things take so long to get done.;) Here most work a lot more so no one has time for a 2 hour lunch of proper food and portions and woof down whatever trash they can in a short time to get back to work. From what my wife has told me from years of Euro business travel, and what I learned working with the German TUV is a lot more time is taken to eat properly.

food

Don't get me wrong, i loved most of the food over there, its obvious i love food! I try all the regional foods when i travel, its just that sausage wasn't really sausage, basically a glorified horribly textured hot dog! When the plates arrived i was trying to figure out the horrible smell at the table only to bend down, sniff and realize the smell was from the piece of cartilage, intestine, grounded meat in front of me. Most at the table laughed and stated that they don't even eat that...i know how to pick them.

Mark,

My wife was in a town in the French Alps where they made a lot that stuff, cheeses too. Some sausage varieties actually had mold growing as a normal course of preparation. Really freaked her out.

Russian sausage was pretty good, as was most all Russian food.
