I'm looking at buying the 11 yr old some sort of go-pro ish camera for christmas and was wondering if you guys had any recommendations for something that wouldn't break the bank given that he's only 11.

The GoPro hero films 1080@30fps and is under $150 these days. The hero 3 had some issues and the hero 4 is awesome but expensive. Also the new 360 fly cameras are freakin cool. It literally films 360 degrees and when playing the video back you can pan around and watch from any angle you want. It is also the camera that cost Chad Reed his race team.....kind of

I didn't know about the go-pro/chad reed issue until just now. I'm not a big Reed fan but having read the background i think I'll skip go-pro on principle alone.

Okay you made me look.
Somebody should check their pockets money has to be involved how could you say that and think was normal

Keep in mind its not just the camera. Its the mounts and decent editing software. I am probably $300 into different mounts alone. We do love ours.

Contour Roam. Cheap, and one switch to operate. Comes with their own software that is basic and easy to use. No bells or whistles. I have tons of video from these. Good quality video for the money. I recommend the Roam2, but if you get a Roam (the original) you can update the firmware to Roam2 very easily, and then the quality is even better.

Here's an example on ebay-

Geek pro on Amazon for $ 70. Is a copy from go pro and people is happy with it.
For an 11 year olds boy I think is excellent and won't break the bank.

I use to make all of my mounts. Go to Lowes and let the imagination run wild. The aluminum yard sticks that are about $5 make the possibilities endless. For editing I use Cyberlink power director 13. Great software and doesn't break the bank. Think it was about $75

SJ4000 or SJ5000 if you have the cash, slightly lower quality batteries but the SJ4000 can use Go-Pro 2 mounts and lenses (can't tell about the SJ5000).

A tad lower quality on color management (or whatever is the term), but if you shoot 1080p it's very very very (can't stress that enough) close to the Go-Pro sibling but costs only ~100$ with mounts and 2 batteries (also has WiFi and what not, 170 view angle, etc... very poor on night filming tough).

Search youtube for reviews/films you will be amazed of the quality. Be careful tough if you plan to buy one, not to buy one of the clones.

If you need any further details, please let me know and i'll share my experience with the camera. I am very happy with mine.

I am currently using Sony action cam.
Probably more than you want to spend
But has very good stabilization and image quality

Check some of my vids

Drift

What kind of mounts does it use? Is it very heavy?

Here are photo's of my camera. Of course there are mounts for just about everything application. They now have a unit even smaller than this. As for the weight, you can feel it ever so slightly thru the goggle frame but I like that, since I know its still attached and not laying in the trail 20 miles back.

Rod,does the drift battery give 3h in 1080p?
For me a >=3h capacity is the key in enduro riding... A second battery is an option but don;t we have enough to think of?

Mine stayed on for 160 miles of dual sport (LBL200) so about 6 hours best I remember. The odd thing for me anyway, it will record in 1 hour intervals and restart on its own, like a time lapse thing. Forgive me as I'm technically challenged at anything above programming my ICO :)

The GoPro only films in 17min. intervals. That goggle strap mount is interesting. Might have to look into one of these
