waterpump bearing failure 2006 de300

Just thought I would fill everyone in on a engine issue I had on the weekend. Actually the bike has been making a noise for a while now (and now that I think of it I have always thought it has ran hot), it sounded like a tick in the power valve at first, I took of the inspection covers and pulled the pipe and everything looked great. I went for a couple more rides and then this weekend the tick got much worse and was coming from the cases, soon I could not get the bike into first gear, I went directly back to the trucks (after endoing into a tree) and loaded up.

At home I pulled the drain plug and out came various bearing pieces so I went a bit deeper and pulled the clutch side engine cover and discovered that the inner bearing had exploded and the impeller shaft had snapped right at the plastic gear. Some of the debris got under the shift fork so that is why it would not shift.

Now comes the delima of do you split the cases to ensure all debris is out? Or do you flush the system very well and hope it is all out?

Moral of the story is if you have an engine tick or strange noise that sounds like it is from the power valve take the time to pull your water pump cover and check the tolerances of your water pump impellar especially if you think the bike is running hot.

Compare the pieces to a good bearing and see if they are all accounted for. Next go fishing with a magnet, and flush the trans with some cheap ATF. You may get lucky.
